The U.S. State Department said in a statement Monday that a Minnesota man who joined al-Shabab in 2008 is in custody of the Somali government.
Below is the statement KARE 11 received from spokesperson Pooja Jhunjhunwala:
Mohamed Abdullahi Hassan, aka "Miski," surrendered to the Federal Government of Somalia on November 6, 2015. Miski, born in Somalia, is a lawful permanent resident of the United States and is in the custody of the Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency in Mogadishu. The U.S. Mission to Somalia is discussing this case with the Somali Federal Government. The United States does not have an extradition agreement with Somalia. We do not have any further details on the discussions at this time.
Hassan was federally indicted for allegedly recruiting Minnesotans to fight in Somalia for the al-Shabab terror group. He may have also inspired attacks in Texas and more recently, California. In May, two gunmen in Texas opened fire at a contest where people drew cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad. Twelve people were killed.
Some media reports say authorities are investigating if Hassan used social media to communicate with Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik, the two who conducted last week's shooting in San Bernardino, Calif. that killed 14 people and wounded more than 20 others. The FBI has yet to confirm those reports.
