” Zenith “

I worked for a TV sales / repair shop when I was a student back in the late 70’s ...US made ( actually by ‘79 Zenith was made in Mexico ) TVs were junk . I remember unboxing a new Zenith console and there were only 2 blots holding the picture tube to the cabinet instead of 4 , and the chassis was not bolted down to the cabinet at all ! Just lying sideways inside the box . Wonder why Sony , Hitachi , Toshiba and others took over the market ?

Agreed. We buy very little anymore, too. We’re just picking up a few small Christmas presents is all.

As I recall, when GM announced they had become profitable, it was primarily due to sales of Chinese built vehicles, sold around the rest of the world. They weren’t importing them into the USA. The sales in the west were still losing money.

That’s it! It had an aluminum steering sector. GM was still trying to `iron out the wrinkles’ on front-wheel drive. (Wasn’t the Olds Toronado the first?)
In cold weather the steering would `seize up’. Trying to turn the wheel was like trying give a bull baboon an enema in a phone booth! And lots of other problems I could live with, but the steering was a deal breaker.
I had owned a VW Beetle, and the only `repair’ was replacing the battery—after 9 years.
GM was repairing cars `82 and newer no charge, I believe with a cast-iron sector replacement. I told them I’d never buy another. They can sell them to the Chinee.

I’m old enough to remember `Made In USA’ stickers.
It really is discouraging.

Trump this week on Kelly and Michael talked about China buying our representatives and cashing in when their reps are elected.

This is probably a prime example of China buying our congressits, and Donald will probably bring this up to po even more of the establishment.

How many times have the UAW workers voted for Obama and their rat congressits in the past few years?

Union thug members enjoy your voting results.

Sam Walton tried to stock Walmart with all American goods but had to drop that because so many things were already being made elsewhere Instead

You fill it up with gasoline and in 30 minutes, it needs to be filled up again.

No comparison between Japanese-made vehicles and Chinese-made . Maybe someday , but not now .

The Chinese marques have staked out a position at the low end of the market. This generally means cutting process and materials corners. I expect for a given (typically rock-bottom) price, no one beats them on quality. The American and Japanese makes sold in China generally have components made locally, typically by subcontractors that have set up plants in China. My understanding is that they are in no way inferior to their American and Japanese equivalents. In fact, they are likely to be superior to their American counterparts because the UAW isn't padding their labor costs.

is this a union busting ploy?

With Addidas now producing 100% robot made shoes, it is only a short time for 100% robot made automobiles.

I had a '73 Buick Regal in the late 70s. I had no problems with it. It was almost identical to the '74 below: white with burgundy interior and padded landau top.

The Chinese are very practical when it comes to big ticket purchases. Those who can afford it buy foreign products. Nonetheless, GM sells more cars there than Toyota, Honda and Nissan combined:

I suspect this means GM's made-in-China products are every bit as reliable as their made-in-China Japanese counterparts.

Vega, Chevette, Cimarron, Citation Monza, Cavalier and Celebrity

Actually the Vega was a cute little wagon or sedan delivery, they had a rotten engine. A small Buick V6 would have made it a much better car. It was essentially the same as a Monza, which was available with a V8. Some Vegas got a SBC transplant.

The rest of those s-boxes...meh. The Celebrity was adequate.

“Wasn’t the Olds Toronado the first?)”

The Toronado/Eldorado were tanks with front wheel drive. The same drive train was used in the GMC made Recreational Vehicle. It allowed a low floor level in the RV due to no driveshaft to the rear.
