Donald Trump and Ben Carson could dangle the possibility of independent runs for president well into the primary season next year, but they can't wait forever.

State filing deadlines would give the two Republicans until about March to launch independent or third-party campaigns, experts said. That would give a well-financed campaign enough time to gather sufficient signatures on petitions so the candidate could appear on the ballot in every state.

There’s no way either Trump or Carson will run independent. Trump wouldn’t spend the money (unless he starts soliciting contributions) and Carson wouldn’t be able to finance it.

WHAT IF, a frog had wings?

Trump is going to the Primaries and Carson is going home.

They won’t. Carson can’t afford it and Trump won’t spend it.

They should file if they can maintain their other filing as a Republican at the same time.

Dangle that sword over the RNC’s head!

The A.P. would love this, but it’s not going to happen.

Let liberals continue to live in wishland while we WIN in reality!

The Republican party establishment needs to have this put front and center every day. Play nice and fair or else. Trump has the money and stature to create a 3rd party. Who wouldn’t go to it if the Republicans were then left as corrupt GOPe?

Not exactly dealing with other possibilities such as becoming the nominee of another party that is already on a substantial number of ballots....Constitution, Libertarian, etc.

They might welcome a name recognition candidate. Hard to say.

I believe the party on the almost all ballots is the Libertarian.

I’m not seeing it. Trump won’t spend tens of millions of his own money on what he knows would be a losing proposition.

If Trump gets screwed over by the GOP bastards, he will take the step of a third-party. Remember what Trump said, “You be nice to me and I’ll be nice to you” (or something quite similar). He has a way of “heaping on” if you screw him over.

I have no doubt Trump and et al...have their plans already in place. As the article states, he has a few months to decide but when/if he does, be prepared for some real fireworks when the gloves come off.

Third party candidates don't win, they just allow the Democrat or the Republican to. Will Trump be willing to spend tens of millions of his own dollars on something he knows will be a losing effort? I'm not sure he would.
