You know what's dangerous about a minor-league baseball team marketing person watching a Miss Universe Pageant gone terribly wrong? Ideas start happening.
That was the case for Nathan Barnett, who works in the front office of the Frisco RoughRiders, the Texas Rangers' Double-A affiliate. On Sunday, Barnett saw pageant host Steve Harvey announce the wrong winner.
As anyone with marketing in his blood will do, Barnett immediately reached for his cellphone.
"It was not one person's idea, really, but I saw the gaffe happen live and texted [Roughriders director of marketing and promotions] Matt Ratliff that we had to invite Miss Colombia out and build a night around it."
Ratliff said he "loved the idea." And as it will do, the marketing department spitballed ideas.

Miss Colombia, who spent a record-short four minutes as Miss Universe should make a fortune from advertising and appearance ventures this year.
Yes, indeed, if she plays her cards right (and keeps a sense of humor), that gaffe could turn into something very profitable for her. Ironically, if not for that gaffe, no one would’ve remembered the runner-up, and many people wouldn’t have paid much attention to the pageant at all.
On seeing the words ‘Frisco Rough Riders’ a different connotation came to mind.
