Poland rebukes ‘left-wing’ EU commission
EU Observer ^ | 12 Jan 2016 15:58 | Andrew Rettman

Poland has accused the Dutch EU commissioner, Frans Timmermans, of "left-wing" bias and "astonishing" ignorance in trying to "exert pressure" on constitutional reform.

If Timmermans had expected a conciliatory reply, on technical issues, after he asked the Polish justice minister, Zbigniew Ziobro, in December to explain the reforms, then he would have been surprised on Monday evening (11 January). [...]

Ziobro's letter arrived shortly before the commission holds a debate on Poland on Wednesday. [...]

Some commissioners, such as Germany's Guenther Oettinger, have said Poland should be placed under a supervisory mechanism, which could lead to EU sanctions. ...

Seems like the Eastern Europeans are more democratic that the socialist West Europeans. How ironic.

The Germans are showing their arrogant, fascist side again

Different policies, but same attitude.

They ought to know; considering that they lived under socialism/communism long enough.

Poland and other Eastern European countries would be wise to set up a neutral third way. Forget about NATO and the EU. Take care of themselves and be a buffer between Russia and the EU.

Otherwise, the EU will use those eastern European countries as a dumping grounds for all of their problems. And as vassal states in forever debt to Mother Germany.

It was called the "Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth", it was Pilsudski's dream when Poland regained her Independence in 1918.

They will be pulled between Western Europe (as led by the German bloc) and Russia as they were in the past. History is repeating.

Germany's Guenther Oettinger, have said Poland should be placed under a supervisory mechanism

They used to call that a 'Governor General'. The last German to hold that post was Hans Frank.

You're right.

Seems that Oettinger has passed his Vergangenheitsbewaeltigung course with revisionist colors.

(2007) Oettinger, governor of Baden-Wuerttemberg, wanted to deliver a dignified eulogy at the funeral of ex-governor Hans Filbinger. But in his speech, he claimed his predecessor was against the Nazi's ideology. A glance in the history books shows otherwise. linky

Seems to me that the PO folks are just upset the PiS is doing the same exact thing with the public channels that the PO did when they were in charge, and they go whining to their EU masters to bail them out. Granted, I don’t like the idea of government-run media, but the PO is being way out of line here. And it’s not as if Poland doesn’t have private media.

===I don`t like the idea of government-run media===

No hard feelings please. Yet I think that Americans can't understand what the term “government media” means when it comes to Poland. Poland is uni-ethnic country, to some extent you may say “a tribe” country. So, the government is our “emblem”, our pride, the emanation of the nation chosen in the general election. It's the visual sign of Poland's sovereignty. So, when the Germans say "we attack the Polish govt, not the nation" they only make us infuriated because they attack the Polish nation the most straight way as possible. If media are run by the state, they are run by the nation. The free Polish government = the Polish independence and we don't make any compromises here. (WWII is the best example for that)

This way of thinking doesn't work and actually is completely different in the EU let alone the USA.

PO made the media indifferent to the national affairs. It was a PC pro-EU leftist brainwashing machine. Now all is changed, the EU propaganda vanished like a fog, now we are shown things that were simply forbiden so far. Now I can watch TV with a sigh of relieve...

And when the Muslims kick the Volksdeutsche out of Germany, it may very well be the Poles that shelter them, but they won’t get to rename Gdansk back to “Danzig.”

Nope. The EU rules by crisis, so they have something up their sleeve even amid all this chaos.

I hear you. They can’t understand that this was what a plurality of the Polish electorate voted for. But they seem to think that the PiS somehow came to power via a coup d’etat.

I think this international media mayhem is done on purpose. The Polish Govt are about to tax all banks and huge international stores which gives billions of USD per year in the state budget. So far, they've been free from such taxes. Once the bill is approved by the parliament, only the Constitution Tribunal could block it. So, make no mistake, billions are at stake.

Anyway, Hungary officially announced that it would never vote for any sanctions against Poland. Since the decision must be reached unanimously, Poland seems to be safe :)

Btw, Poland has never had a better friend than Hungary. Strange, two nations speaking completely different languages very hard to learn for each other...
