John Roberts Should Be a Quick Confirm.
National Review ^ | July 20, 2005 | Senator Ted Cruz

Posted on 01/18/2016 3:10:56 PM PST by true believer forever

"As an individual, John Roberts is undoubtedly a principled conservative, as is the president who appointed him. He clerked for Chief Justice Rehnquist, worked in the Reagan White House, and served as the principal deputy solicitor general in President George H.W. Bush's Justice Department.

As a jurist, Judge Roberts' approach will be that of his entire career: carefully, faithfully applying the Constitution and legal precedent.

He is a mainstream judge, respected across the ideological spectrum. Thus, he's earned praise from liberal icons such as Harvard Law Professor Larry Tribe, and Chicago Law Professor Cass Sunstein, as well as from Clinton Solicitors General Walter Dellinger and Seth Waxman, and Carter and Clinton Counsel Lloyd Cutler, the latter two of whom both described Roberts as a man of "unquestioned integrity and fair-mindedness."

As Professor Tribe observed Tuesday night, "It is clear that in the absence of some serious objection that is not now visible . . . he is very likely to be confirmed.”

The Senate should confirm him swiftly."

You believe that Cruz and Roberts were co conspirators to give us Obamacare?

Trump talking about Obama in early 2009:

"As of October of 2008, the U.S. government reported a $237 billion deficit. The good news is that Obama seems to be well aware of the situation. His comments have led me to believe that he understands how the economy works on a comprehensive level. He has also surrounded himself with very competent people, and that's the mark of a strong leader. I have confidence he will do his best, and we have someone who is serious about resolving the problems we have and will be facing in the future."

Exactly. And Obama turned out to be as big a fake as Roberts. Only Trump supporters don't call Trump the perfect conservative and Trump doesn't bill himself as the consistent conservative who never makes a mistake. If you do that, you better have the bona fides to support it.

If Cruz and his supporters want to vest in Cruz as the smartest conservative imaginable, then he should live up to the notion. Someone as smart as Cruz is perceived to be should have seen through Roberts long before anyone else.

Hildy, if Donald Trump had placed Roberts on the court, we would NEVER hear the end of it from you. NEVER!

Cruz champions the guy and Roberts makes one of the worst decisions in our nation’s history, and it means nothing to you.

If you want to rationalize it fine. I can’t.

I don’t want Cruz anywhere near the nomination for the court from here on out.

Roberts surprised everybody. Everyone thought he was smart. He proved that he is stupid.

Anyone who could look at that picture of John Roberts & not see the obvious is really, really clueless. And there are a lot of people in politics & the ‘faith community’ like that (who aren’t ‘out’ yet). I thought I’d led a sheltered life. . .

“Roberts was a conservative..up until he wasn’t. You have a right to not like someone, but to blame him for Obamacare is quite a stretch.”

Clearly you did not read my post. I didn’t say a word about Obamacare.

I criticized the very smart Ted (he has a harvard degree) for calling Roberts a “principled conservative”.

He uses that word. This tells you he does not know what it means.

But he thinks about what it would be like to date her if he wasn't her father.

And you don't find that creepy?

Saying "he thinks about what it would be like to date her" is your way of implying some sort of incestuous fantasy on Trump's part. When, in fact, he made a simple declarative statement she's hot and if she wasn't his daughter and he was younger he'd date her.

What's going on in your head that makes you immediately think it is some sort of slimy statement?

Ask Trump about it next time you see him.

I don’t get it. He makes a creepy statement about his daughter and you all act like it wasn’t creepy.

I think you all are creepy.

I guess I have, too, since I didn't think about it till just now. :)

I suggest you go over to this site and read about why you might be suffering from cognitive dissonance about Trump.

On everybody loves raymond, marie was once going on about what a good husband raymond was and said "If I was 20 years younger and you weren't my son .. I have heard variations of that kind of statement in many different situations.

I chose a generic example. It actually is something of a cliche...

No. Cruz supporters like to paint Cruz as the smartest conservative on the planet. The smartest conservative on the planet should have seen through Roberts long before the average people did, no?

Another blast from Cruz' checkered past.

Yep. The Uniparty sticks together. There is so much on Cruz that has been drowned out. They have created a new narrative for him. That means he has been groomed the same way as Obama.

BTTT.

Who knew about that crazy adoption problem? Warren Harding had bad luck with Albert Fall. There is no guarantee against bad luck.

mmmmmkay. I reckon you should be gigged for the eventual misdeeds of anyone you think might be a good hire, even if you were not the one who made the call to hire them.

That's the logic, here.

I know no one who picks well 100% of the time. (Otherwise, the Donald would never have had to say "You're Fired!".)

Some are easier to fire than others.

Cruz was just one of a herd of people who approved of Roberts, otherwise he would not have been appointed to the bench. But Ted gets the blame for things which were arguably out of character for Roberts (which is the reason for the still incredulous disappointment over the Obamacare vote).

I thought we didn't hang people for other people's actions.

Well, I still give Roberts a B- rating for this reason. Obama has PUBLICLY threatened him, his life, his family, his co-workers if he didn’t give a favorable result to Obama, especially on the Obamacare issues. Otherwise, Roberts voted mostly with the conservatives.

Maybe you forget the number of people who have died or disappeared since Obama first ran for president. There was a list of them at Nachum’s List for some time...and I think Roberts understood the threat to be real.

I would like to hear Roberts’ story sometime (when the threat of death is not hanging over his head).
