I Googled "Eight or ten blizzards a year are not uncommon to coastal areas" and that phrase came up with several websites on the weather in Antarctica.
Anyhow, yes technically a blizzard is:
According to the National Weather Service, 'blizzard' means the following conditions prevail:
There is sustained wind or frequent gusts of 35 miles per hour or greater.
There is falling and/or blowing snow, frequently reducing visibility to less than one-quarter of a mile.
The conditions must persist for a minimum of three hours.
The popular perception of a blizzard involves a large quantity of snow, but that is frequently not the case. This is especially true in connection with storms that move southeast out of Canada into the northern United States, particularly the northern plains. That particular area is so far removed from any source of moisture that snowfall is actually minimal in terms of water content.
But a Nor'easter is something different. Not all Nor'easter's are technically blizzards, but can have blizzard conditions sometimes far inland from the coast; they are basically like a hurricane with snow.
This storm was both. Where I am 30+ inches fell in a 24-hour period and with sustained winds of 35 MPH and near zero visibility for more than 3 hours.
Here in NJ (about a dozen miles west of NYC) they’ve already announced our schools are closed tomorrow. I guess there is nowhere left to put the snow, and they can’t clear the school properties.
Yes, we have similar conditions — two and a half feet of powdery snow, but very deep drifts. People usually shovel their entire walk, but this time most people are just doing a narrow path the width of the shovel, with walls of snow on either side. The snow plow hasn’t even been here yet, Sunday evening — so I guess there will be hard times for people who have to work, since we are 4miles from the nearest public transport and 2 hilly miles to the nearest main road.
Thanks for all your info. I googled last night too because it was just so weird that he vomited then slept on and off all day. He woke up today feeling ok but sore and drank a ton of OJ (right out of the bottle, lol). I made sure he had water throughout the night.
So he did the same thing today! Shoveled again for a few hours and came in sick and went right to bed. A few hours ago he had some soup and a little bit ago he had leftover Spanish rice and tacos. He’s sore but says he feels good otherwise.
The doctor thought it was the flu when he returned my call yesterday but I’m not so sure. I’ll keep an eye on it. Thanks again for the info.
All masses were canceled yesterday and today here, too. Everyone is still digging out, lol.
I made Pastina soup, Spanish rice and tacos yesterday and had enough left over for today.
He’s doing ok. Did the same thing today with the same result but doing ok again now. I’ll keep an eye on it.
I hear you about falling. I haven’t been out and haven’t helped with shoveling. We got 2’ or close to it. I have a meniscus tear that is healing so I’m not taking any chances!
We’ve been fortunate and haven’t lost power. You seem set meal wise :)

Several of us are very concerned that your husband could be in more trouble than he realizes. If he has the flu, he will have a fever, and the doctor should have asked about that. You need a second opinion and examination by a competent evaluator. If you have Vitamin C, try giving him 500 mg. every 6 hours. Can’t hurt, might do some good. But get him in for examination ASAP.
My sweetheart had a very hard fall a few years ago. His hip hurt terribly. He limped about for 10 days, kept saying I think it feels a little better. I finally called his best friend, a doctor, and his son in medical school. They urged him to go in for an xray. We went and his hip was broken. The shaft between the main leg bone and the hip socket had broken and telescoped on itself. They immediately entered him in the hospital and operated putting in 3 steel pins. For a year they were watching him to be sure the bone in the socket had restored good circulation and was not rotting. He still thinks it could have healed without the operation. Of course, if he had fallen or even stepped wrong it could have twisted out and caused much worse damage. Macho men are nuts, some times we women have to really put our foot down. This is one of those times, DO IT!!! If he dies and you didn’t you will never forgive yourself. Or if he survives a heart attack you will be paying the bills for years. The half gallon water a day I recommended is for life. Low blood volume forces the heart to work harder, raising the blood pressure, and thick blood has a harder time moving through capillaries, like those in the heart and causing blockages and heart muscle death—heart attack.

There’s also the risk that he could have potassium and/or salt deficiency.
If he was sweating a lot or doing intense exercise, that can cause potassium loss which could cause some of those symptoms.
FWIW, one cup of OJ contains 14% of the US RDA of potassium.
He may be instinctively going for what he needs by drinking that much OJ.
Twink - I have to echo gleeaikin’s message. I’ve been looking to see if you’ve been posting since 11 pm last night and was concerned. It definitely would be good to follow up and find out why he’s been vomiting.
It can be normal if someone gets nausea like that after strenuous exercise. But if your husband runs for miles and doesn’t usually get sick then this is not normal - not normal for him.

Oh I agree and it worries me. He doesn’t have the flu even though he and the doctor thinks it could be that. I know what I saw yesterday and again today.
I know he’s stubborn and I give up so as not to nag. I do the same thing, or did until I put something off for too long and suffered the consequences. That tends to make one more proactive.
Thank you again for the info and suggestions and I will keep on it. He’s working from home tomorrow and I have a snow day so we’ll see how it goes.
It’s frustrating because I can see that something is wrong but until he does then it’s moot. I know I wait forever until I call the doctor about something, less so now but still wait until it’s something that can’t be explained away. I’m glad I’m not the only one that thinks something is wrong here.

He doesn’t sweat abnormally and runs at least 3 miles/day. Yesterday and today was weird with the vomiting and OJ. He rarely drinks OJ. I found it odd he wanted OJ. I said no to it yesterday but today he guzzled it out of the bottle.
He shoveled snow for hours yesterday and today and each time came in out of sorts. Vomiting and slept on and off for hours.He seems fine now.
I know that some men have the *Have to conquer it* mentality, but shoveling is best done in shifts. Even having grown up shoveling out every winter, you just can’t do it all at once without feeling sick.
It’s not going anywhere, and if it does, then it saves you work.
I’ve learned to watch the forecast and not do any more shoveling than I need. Like today, we have snow from last week and I could have gone out and tried to scrape the drive and walks down to pavement, but the forecast is for in the 40’s so I know what little we have is going to melt in a few days.
I have better things to do with my time these days.
FWIW, we got nothing from this storm, which is a HUGE and unexpected blessing. We normally get nailed from the nor’easter and then the lake effect that sets up behind it the next day, so we get a double whammy.
I agree and this is why it worries me. What happened yesterday and today is not normal. He runs every day. He participates in 5Ks regularly.
What happened yesterday isn’t normal but maybe he had a stomach bug as you suggested (and the doctor suggested and he suggested). Then he was fine today until he shoveled snow again.

Mmmm! What do you put in your pastina soup? I like a nice chicken broth with a little bit of pastina and crosswise slices of broccoli stems.
He grew up in Erie so he knows snow and lake effect. We got clobbered this weekend (as we’ve had numerous times in the past). It kills me that he tried to do it all by himself until he couldn’t then asked the girls to help. He only asked them for help once he had to come inside and I told them to do it.
What is it with men who refuse to ask for help? Granted, I couldn’t help (been there done that for years and I’m done, lol but couldn’t now even if I wanted to). But we have four young, able bodied kids who could and did help. He didn’t have to be out there doing the toughest work. They came in sore yesterday and today. It’s hard shoveling snow with high winds and today with 2’ on the ground. Teens and twenty somethings sore but a 50 yr old man with high blood pressure thinks he can do it all by himself. Ugh.
