One summer my husband was working on his boat (Jersey shore) and coming home exhausted and a bit dizzy. I fixed him a half gallon of water with 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/4 teaspoon of potassium salt substitute, 1/4 teaspoon of epsom salts (magnesium salt), and 1/2 teaspoon of bicarb. He took it to the boat yard and came home saying it was very effective. He left the nearly empty bottle on the kitchen table. Later that evening we were chatting at the kitchen table. He pickup up the bottle and took a swig. Ugh, he said, this tastes awful. So it tastes fine when you need it.
One 97f summer day I crossed the street to visit my neighbor. She was in tears. I asked what was the matter. She said, I don’t know. Things are OK with my son, my job and my boyfriend but I feel so depressed. Then I asked what she had been doing. Oh, an hour in the sun gardening. I ran home, filled a 12 oz. glass with water and added in 1/4 tsp. each of epsom salts, and light salt (half regular and half potassium). Gave it to her, said it will taste awful but drink it anyway (when it is diluted to 1/2 gallon there is much less taste). I went to the grocery store and returned in about 20 minutes. She was now washing dishes and singing as she worked. Bananas and cantalope are high in potassium as are other fresh fruits and vegetable, and cooked for that matter.
Very interesting! So that’s what Gatorade is made of — plus food coloring and sugars. Yours sounds way better!
