Some news to report out of Las Vegas where Donald Trump sat down with Field & Stream magazine for an interview during the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s annual SHOT Show.

First up, the GOP front-runner came out against letting states control public lands now run by the federal government saying, “I don’t like the idea because I want to keep the lands great, and you don’t know what the state is going to do”:lands

lands

This is what they’re talking about, with the land in red owned by the federal government:

publicland

Rand Paul has already spoken about this, saying in 2015 that federal lands should be handed over to state or local governments:

“I’d either sell or turn over all the land management to the states,” Paul, a Republican presidential candidate and senator from Kentucky, said, landing him big applause at a campaign event. “I don’t think the federal government needs to be involved.”

Later in the interview, Trump seemed to signal that we shouldn’t allow oil and gas companies to drill any new wells on federally-controlled lands because there’s already “so much energy”:

Don’t worry, he will run to Breitbart to clarify his statement.

Ruh, roh, Trumpettes. We gotta be “establishment,” now states shouldn’t be allowed to control land within their borders. Trump is showing what is a squishy populist.

Trump’s wrong on this one.

Trump needs to really understand the depths of unconstitutionality the feds have plumbed including unconstitutionally commandeering state lands outside of the guidelines of Article I, Section 8, Clause 17.

Those lands constitutionally BELONG to the states NOT to the feds.

Mr. Trump, America’s greatness is in the AMERICAN PEOPLE and their freedom to govern themselves individually and locally which includes state governance. America’s greatness is NOT in the unconstitutional federal government which is expressly limited by the Constitution.

Wait, wouldn’t “keeping it great” suggest not having it under the control of ANY government??

I disagree with Trump on this one but at least he has shown the ability to evolve on issues as he gets more familiar with them. Hopefully he will change his mind. At least I don’t see Trump trying to snatch millions of additional acres from states for so called monuments.

Someone had better tell Trump he’s massively wrong in his desire to maintain FedGov control of vast areas of US terrirtory. There is no compelling interest in FedGov having all of this control.

I support Trump, but he’s wrong here. But I also don’t support just handing over the Federal lands to the States without some restrictions on what they can do with it. Trump’s right, the states are all in such financial disarray, that they might use divestment of these lands to cover their debt instead of dealing with the root cause of the debt. For starters, the BLM should be reined in a bunch, and have their guns taken away. Then there needs to be a rational discussion of how to properly dispose of the Federal “interest” in these lands. And when the lands are turned over to the states, there needs to be legislation severely limiting the state BLMs that will surely be created.

I'm going to shock you Isara in that I disagree with Trump on this one.

Trump brings up the states mishandling the land.

I wonder if there is an example of this?

Otherwise, the land seized under Clinton and Obama SHOULD be returned back to the states.

Trump stated he did not trust some states to mange the lands because environmentalists, think Oregon, California, Washington, etc could make the public land off limits to hunting period. He further worried about states selling off public land in a financial pit. Those lands would probably be sold to large investors. I understand his arguments.
