Magnitude 7.1 earthquake felt throughout Southcentral Alaska Alaska Dispatch News January 24, 2016 Email -A+A Southcentral Alaska was rocked by a strong and prolonged magnitude-7.1 earthquake early Sunday morning.

The quake struck 86 miles west-southwest of Anchor Point at 1:30 a.m. Alaska time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The USGS initially measured the quake at magnitude 6.4, but upgraded it to 7.1 shortly after. The Alaska Earthquake Center said it hit about 65 miles west of the Kenai Peninsula town of Homer and about 160 miles southwest of Anchorage.

According to the National Weather Service, the quake was not expected to generate a tsunami.

— NWS Tsunami Alerts (@NWS_NTWC) January 24, 2016 The Anchorage Fire Department reported it was "very busy with reports of gas odors, alarm systems sounding, broken water lines, etc." in the wake of the earthquake. The Anchorage Police Department said shortly after 2 a.m. that it had not received any reports of major damage or injury.

Twitter and Facebook users reported scattered power outages around the region from the quake, which continued for about 30 seconds, and was strong enough to knock objects off shelves in homes and stores around the region.

— BB Bliss (@BlissBitch) January 24, 2016 Many said it was the strongest earthquake they'd felt in decades of living in Alaska.

Twitter users reported outages in the area of Downtown, Lake Otis and Tudor and the neighborhood of Government Hill in Anchorage. Matanuska Electric Association was reporting scattered outages on Facebook, including at its Douglass substation in Willow, along with "several other feeder outages, especially impacting the Palmer area."

Chugach Electric was reporting about 4,100 customers without power around 2 a.m. Municipal Light and Power said crews were responding to "some isolated, localized outages" in its service area.

Twitter users said they could feel the temblor as far away as Fairbanks.

— Diane Fleeks (@alaskahippo) January 24, 2016 Aftershocks were rattling the area near the initial quake Sunday morning; the USGS reported earthquakes with magnitudes of 4.0 and 3.2 within a half-hour of the first, stronger earthquake.

The earthquake rolled many out of bed, but in Anchorage, the bars were still open when the shaker struck.

James Mooney, general manager at Downtown bar Humpy’s Alehouse, said the establishment lost power during the quake, with some glasses and dishes falling and breaking. The bar’s adjacent sister businesses, Flattop Pizza + Pool and the Subzero Lounge, fared a little better.

“We had to close a little early,” Mooney said. “Our computer systems were knocked out on the Humpy’s side -- Flattop and Subzero still had their power.”

“That was a crazy earthquake, man -- I’ve been here 20 years, and that’s the most powerful one I’ve felt,” Mooney said.

7.1-magnitude earthquake hits Alaska

By Joshua Berlinger, CNN

Updated 6:56 AM ET,
Sun January 24, 2016

(CNN)A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Alaska early Sunday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake’s epicenter hit near Cook Inlet, 162 miles southwest of Anchorage. It was about 50 miles deep.

Joshua Veldstra, a professional photographer who lives in Homer, said the earthquake lasted about 30 seconds.

“When it hit, it was just soft at first, and it just kept getting bigger,” Veldstra said. “It was one of those moments where you didn’t’ know if it was going to get worse or if it was going to calm down.”

Anchorage police tweeted that there were no reports of major damage or injury following the earthquake.

The USGS reported that there was a low likelihood of casualties and damage, but the agency’s “Did You Feel It?” map shows strong shaking could be felt near Anchorage.

The National Weather Service said there was no tsunami threat from the quake because of how deep it struck.

Two smaller earthquakes — a 4.0 and a 3.2 — struck within 30 minutes after the first one.

We spend our winters in Fairbanks, summers up along the Yukon; near the border. Haven’t felt a good shaker since Nov 3rd 2002. That one was a 7.9 and the ground opened up in my front yard; half expected to see the devil come crawling out. That one broke all our utility lines and my well head in laundry room blew off; had a geyser hitting the ceiling for over an hour; quite the ground pressure. I went to bed about 1 am last night, never as much felt a thing. Time to clean up folks, fire up generator for football; no big deal.

Given the recent activity at the Oregon fault, I’d be holding onto my britches for the next month.

I had just got home from the Bingo hall in Wasilla when it hit, you had a strong rolling jolt and then a boat like sway for 30 seconds, actually made me queasy. No damage that i could see then, will check later on.

Since Sarah Palin was once the Governor of Alaska, this is obviously her fault.

All is well here in Anchorage, but it was long and bumpy and all sorts of different kinds of shaking! Some things fell off shelves, some drawers opened, a clock fell off he wall and it seemed to go on forever. Mom was sitting up and hanging onto the handrail by her bed.

Took me a while to figure out the steady bumping noise I could hear when I went to look around...it was shaking enough to make the 3 hanging light globes in the stairwell bump against each other. They usually sway, but this time they bumped into each other.
