... "We were never close. He was kind of 'to the manor born' and I wasn't," he said, adding that he also questioned the motivation and timing of the criticism.

"I didn't think it was complimentary of his son, George W. Bush, and I didn't think it was very helpful to his other son, who's running for president, so I thought it was a strange thing for him to be doing," Rumsfeld said, who also took a stab at why Jeb Bush's campaign had failed to catch fire.

"I suppose there are some people that are uncomfortable with a dynasty," he said.

The “dynasty” isn't the issue. It's that Jeb isn't, and doesn't want to be, conservative.

God bless Rummy. He took way too much unfair criticism. How could we afford a larger military with all of that nation-building and domestic spending?

Revenge is a dish best served cold. Particularly against the Bush family. Well Played, Mr. Secretary.

I heard him on FoxNews today. He went after Obama and his “no policy” policy.

He’s still commands attention. I always liked Rumsfield.

The former congressman also directly addressed criticism by the senior Bush in his authorized biography last fall. President George H.W. Bush called Rumsfeld an “arrogant fellow” who served “the president badly.”

At the time, Rumsfeld fired back, attributing the harsh words on the age of the elder Bush, who is 91.

On TODAY, Rumsfeld said he and the elder Bush never had a close relationship.

I was giving a presentation to my company’s executive team last year. In it I quoted Mr. Rumsfeld’s famous “Known unknowns and unknown unknowns.” I had a photo of me standing next to Mr. Rumsfeld.

Many of the exec team seem to trend to the left so it was a great moment for me.

The way your quote is structured, it might be important to emphasize that Rumsfeld was referring to Jeb in your first sentence. (sometimes people start commenting before reading the whole thing)

That interview was AWESOME. Just what Jebbie doesn't need. <^..^>

I always liked Rumsfeld. He struck me as an earnest public servant who was not about enriching himself but doing what he thought was right for the country.

Yep, I liked his “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there” quip.

True.. Jeb is a line, lorn creature, but his real problem is Trump’s oversized persona. It makes Bush look like a corporate wonk who avoids the water cooler at all costs.

I met Rumsfeld while he was the Sec. of Def. and I was in the military. Although the interaction was brief you could tell he was the kind of person that didn’t BS around but you could easily talk to.

I think he struck a lot of people as being just that because that’s exactly what he was doing.

I was referring to the first sentence of what was posted where he's quoted saying "he was of the manor born".

It's no big deal for anyone who either saw the interview or reads the whole posting.

I admire Rumsfeld’s smarts and decisiveness, but I remain profoundly disappointed that he also used those skills to pawn off responsibility in post-initial-victory Iraq to the State Department and Paul Bremer, greatly damaging overall US interests, to avoid responsibility for what he knew would soon happen. Yes, this was consistent with Rumsfeld’s longstanding aversion to using the military for nation-building. But given Rumsfeld’s experience and savvy, the responsible thing to do would be to keep a stronger DoD hand in, with Gen. Jake Garner as the in-country lead, rather than letting uninformed fools make horrible decisions that cost many lives, billions of $, and left continuing problems in the M.E., turning US military victory into political failure. I guess it’s unfair to expect a man to willfully embrace a tar-baby, and yes Rumsfeld had a lot on his plate. But, I wish he had been the sort of man who would oppose a misconceived adventure from the start, rather than backing it, then making a quick handoff. He could have made a massive difference in the overall outcome, though at high personal cost.
