Is it legal to carry around a quarterstaff? I really feel like carrying a quarterstaff around in case of crazy knife wielding Islamic nut jobs...

I’d go for the buck and a quarter staff :).

I had a friend in NYC who made a collapsible one out of pipes and claimed it was his walking stick. I carry a claw hammer and screwdriver around with me when I travel, but have to admit whipping it out of my backpack on short notice would be problematic. Maybe a regular cane would be more maneuverable than a quarterstaff in a crowded environment.

Collapsible baton might work.

Carry a cane. It won’t attract as much attention.
