At least 7,000 Cuban refugees are expected to come to the border in the next coming days.
The activity at the Hidalgo International Bridge continues. For 40 years, Jose Angel Rodriguez has made his living driving a cab.
He said he's seeing more Cubans crossing the port of entry. "They get here every night, in the morning, and at night they get here. They go to Laredo, too," Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez remembered taking a few to a hotel or store. It gets busier each week that passes by.
Down the road from the bridge were a handful of 15-passenger vans. They had Florida license plates. Giovanni Acosta is one of them.
"In Cuba, there's nothing. There's no freedom. We came from Cuba because the pressure that we have there," Giovanni Acosta said.
Acosta said he's waiting for his wife to come to the bridge so he can take her back to Miami. She's taking the same track as he once did. "I did the same path, like all the Cubans did. I came from Ecuador. I walked for 27 days on the road," he said.
Congressman Henry Cuellar's office said Cuban refugees are coming to Laredo's Point of Entry every day and the numbers are increasing. They're coming from Central America through Mexico to the border.
Acosta's van can take more than just his family. He said he can help the Cuban refugees, but his goal is to pick up his family, to bring them safely back home.

And we’ll just let them in I’m sure—open arms, cell phones, and EBT cards galore!
These are coming across the border entry points under some gov’t authoriztion I guess.
I don’t know what the program is that provides for this. Maybe some of the canidates
could explain the program.
Oh yeah and they can collect Social Security even though they never paid into it.
Yea that’s what US law requires. Maybe if Kennedy had let Cuban Patriots kill Castro this wouldn’t be happening. Maybe if Obama wasn’t a commie tool this wouldn’t be happening.
Right because 25 year Olds collect social security.
I know what the law requires and my wife is Cuban FWIW.
Regardless, it isn’t good for the country—but I’d rather have Cubans than Mexicans or Haitians I suppose....
And Medicaid and Section 8.
No, 25 year olds drop anchor babies and collect welfare.
The Border Patrol, aka ICE, was ordered, (by guess who?) to finish the smuggling operation.
Yep, more freebies!
I haven’t been there since 1998, but I doubt it’s become a thriving metropolis in that time. It is off the main highway that goes from McAllen to. . . well, I’ve only been as far as Rio Grande City. And not real far from 281- a major artery in Texas; the Mexican border to, at least, DFW. Hidalgo was just a ‘’wide spot in the road’’.
Why not Matamoros or Laredo?
I haven’t seen any details, but have seen postings about Cruz & Rubio ‘’working on arrangements’’ for Cubans to come into the US. Guess I need to dig around a little.
What was that about (paraphrasing) ‘’loyalties to other countries’’?
Cruz & Rubio (nor was Bobby Jindal) are not eligible to be president of the United States NO MATTER WHAT 0BAMA HAS DONE. Two wrongs DO NOT make a right. They do not ‘’make it even’’. America loses. MORE.
Liz, you’re really good at this. Do you know anything about it?
Future presidents!
(I’m TOTALLY Kidding!!! Please dont kill me!)
If cuba is such a paradise (and has free medical care), why are they leaving?
SSI disability.
We don’t even know if they are Cubans. Cubans used to come here by sea.
You have still have to qualify.
It used to be Cubans came by boat. The law for Cuban refugees was wierd. Something along the lines if they touch landed they can claim refugee status. Immigration agents would wait close to shore and pluck them out of ankle deep water before they “touched” land. They would then be sent packing back to Cuba. I’m sure they weren’t treated well upon thier return.
I guess now they are coming through Texas to avoid the agents on the beach.
On a side note most Cubans are hard working family types who generally vote Republican.
Better than the alternative.
They are afraid that once Obama fully normalizes relations they will lose their special “dry foot” immigration status.
