Quick Summary: Dem Rep. Chaka Fattah is cheating the lawyers defending him in his bribery case by using all of his money to campaign for reelection -- and the Federal judge basically told the lawyers "too bad"
A federal judge on Wednesday called U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah's decision to prioritize fund-raising for his reelection campaign above paying his lawyers "particularly unfair" but denied a request from his defense team to withdraw from his corruption case.
U.S. District Judge Harvey Bartle III said that though the lawyers had not been fully paid in months, they were aware of the time and financial commitments when they signed on to Fattah's case.
They ran a risk when they did not require the Philadelphia Democrat to pay their legal fees up front, Bartle wrote in an opinion. Allowing Fattah time to retain new counsel would likely delay his May 2 trial by months, the judge said.
"It is very late in the game for counsel to be seeking to pull out of this case," Bartle wrote, adding later: "This ship cannot be turned around easily."
The ruling appeared to lock Fattah's lawyers in the awkward position of working for free - at least for now - amid a dispute that has exposed the precarious financial position of the embattled 11-term congressman.

Stiffing your sharks is not exactly the smartest thing to do when heading to trial ... but Reps are not exactly known for being brilliant ... particularly the Dem ones.
Just enter a GUILTY PLEA on your clients behalf.
David Davenport hoses his lawyers! I just imagine that he has to use his given name in court.
Seems to me the judge has put the attorneys in a blatant conflict of interest situation with regard to their client. You can bet that if this guy loses at trial he will raise this conflict on appeal as a basis for setting aside the conviction and granting a new trial.
What Dems protecting each other? Say it ain’t so. LOL.
It’s odd that he changed his name from “David Davenport” to “Chaka Fattah” but still calls himself a Baptist. If I didn’t know better, I would guess a different religion.
It’s hard to feel sorry for this corrupt sleaze’s lawyers when they were defending him on charges where they must have known what they were getting into.
Somehow I don’t feel sorry for his shysters.

He’s jus’ connecting with his “roots,” whatever that means.
Thanks, I was having problems with my selection source.
Stupid sharks, my heart bleeds for them.
If they practice criminal law, they should know if you don’t get it up front, you probably aren’t going to get paid.
Of course, they may have some young associates that need some trial experience. This might be a good case for the young folks to learn on.
And his constituents will keep him in office.
It’s important for the voters to be sure
Fattah doesn’t need to campaign: PA people idolize him.
" defending him in his bribery case" and "campaigning for reelection"
Hope the shyster takes it in the shorts.
