Starship Enterprise will be restored to its 1967 glory: Smithsonian to rebuild 11ft model used in original Star Trek TV show

It has been 50 years since the original model of the Starship Enterprise made its final imaginary voyage.

Today, the 11ft-long model lies in pieces at the Smithsonian Museum in Virginia with a damaged secondary hull and nacelles.

Trekkies the world over have been urging model makers to save this iconic ship.

Now the Smithsonian says it will attempt to do just that, but restoring it to its appearance in 1967, during the filming of the episode 'The Trouble with Tribbles'.

"I've bought a couple of kits after decades of not fooling with scale models."

My son got back into it about 10 years ago. Besides science-fiction models, he does WWII vehicles, planes, tanks, etc...mostly German as that is his field of interest. He goes to Germany at least once a year, and is heading over there next weekend. He picks up models there every now and then. I visited him this past weekend, and he showed me a new model of the Millenium Falcon. This specific model is only available for purchase from Japan, and has many, many detail parts. There's even sitting and standing character figures of Finn, Chewbacca, Han, and Rey. There's also a BB-8. As well, he recently purchased a new model of a German Jagdpanther tank destroyer that he plans to make. His a pretty serious model builder, and builds his own dioramas to put the finished models in.

Always loved good dioramas and plan to do some when I get building.

One kit I bought was an early 70s era K5 blazer. I always liked that series.

I thought the Smithsonian was all about real things, not poorly acted science fiction.

I thought it was about preserving and taking care of things it is responsible for, not throwing things in a closet to rot. If they don't want to take care of it, give it to someone who does.

Hubby and I watched an episode together and were in awe of all the technology from the original Star Trek that is in use today.

Indeed. I was loading a bunch of e-books, movies and music onto a micro-SD memory card recently and was struck by how much more advanced that seemed than even Star Trek envisioned (in the original series, portable data storage devices looked like plastic wafers about the size of 3 1/2" floppy disks).

My sister gave me an Amazon Echo (fancy streaming audio speaker) for Christmas. Damned if it doesn't approximate the Star Trek computers' voice interface. All it needs is Majel Barrett's voice.

Isn't the roadsign to all sorts of places from MASH there too?

I'm not sure - but they *do* have Farrah's swimsuit.

One thing I have noticed is that last season had some weak episodes. Still some good ones but it probably was about time to end it.

Yes, the third season is definitely the weakest. If you've ever read the behind-the-scenes stuff, Roddenberry had pissed off so many writers by then that they were lucky to get what they did. I guess I've always just wished that they'd shuffled the story order a bit and ended on a better note.

I don't know if you are familiar with the site. I don't have any economic involvement with them except as a satisfied customer.
