Coal production down at Twentymile Mine ( Jobs & Energy: Colorado )
Craig Daily Press ^ | February 19, 2016 | Matt Stensland

The downward slide continued for Colorado's coal industry in 2015, highlighted by production at Routt County's Twentymile Mine, which was down 38 percent.

Statewide, production in Colorado was down 18.5 percent, with 18.7 million tons, the lowest amount of coal mined in 23 years.

...

Colorado Mining Association President Stuart Sanderson said the drop in production is a result of lower demand, but it was not caused by natural market forces.

What we are seeing is the direct result of government regulations that are designed to drive coal out of the energy mix," Sanderson said.

He called Colorado's 2010 Clean Air Clean Jobs Act short-sighted. It included plans to convert coal-powered plants into natural gas plants.

Moving forward, there is no question that the companies are suffering from this absurd action by the government to put hardworking men and women out of work

...

about 300 people are currently employed at Twentymile, 35 fewer employees than February 2015. The mine employed 400 in 2014.

The drop in production to 4.1 million tons concerned Routt County Commissioner Cari Hermacinski.

...

We're hoping for better days ahead, but there is no sugar coating the challenges we face," Sanderson said. "All Colorado has done is hurt itself, and all the EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) has done is hurt America

Yet they will still vote for Democrats. I guess they like that “free” marijuana rather than jobs.

One reason Scalia was found dead with a pillow over his head.?

>> a death sentence for coal mining .. labeled the Clean Power Act, required very strict environmental controls to limit emissions from power plants. With inaction in Congress.. Barry directed the EPA to use its authority under the Clean Air Act to propose new regulations ..

the Clean Power Plan makes coal consumption for power generation so prohibitively difficult that it would essentially wipe out the last remnants of the industry ..

If the Clean Power Plan is not struck down, coal is probably finished as a major source of fuel for the future

It is getting tiresome responding to these insulting, uneducated posts regarding the local miners. Many of the employees of 20 Mile live in the adjoining Moffat County. Here are election returns from the last two cycles:

2012

Romney 76%
Obama 22%
3rd 2%

2014

Gardner 76%
udall 17%
3rd 7%

What were the results in your county?

As for dope, anyone failing a periodic drug test is sent to counseling/detox and returned on probation. A second failed test and they're down the road, kicking cans. Who wants to work around someone where their momentary lapse in judgment can get you killed?

I have worked with Sandhogs doing tunneling work. They always managed to pass the tests after the business agent all had them drink some drink. I know they were using, I saw it.

I’m in YX-1 (Louis Gohmert’s district). We’re not quite that good, but pretty close:

2012

Romney 71.6%
Filth 27.5&

2014

Gohmert 77.5%
McKellar 22.5%

While that may be true in Moffat County, it is not true for Colorado. Please consider the election result history from the 270 to win website:

And, yes, Virginia (another purple state) can be just as stupid for voting in a Democratic governor, especially when the last Democrat we had thought he would save money by shutting down the interstate rest stops.

The Republicans are bad enough but this county is in sad shape when a sizable number of people want a socialist for president.

I have worked with Sandhogs doing tunneling work.

You can't equate that riffraff with the most productive miners in the world. Is that project ever going to be completed?

They always managed to pass the tests after the business agent all had them drink some drink.

Perhaps I should have emphasized these drug tests are not pre-scheduled, and administered by the safety department during shift. There are no business agents in a non union mine. Anyone distributing a controlled substance on the property would be meeting the sheriff, after their HR exit interview was complete.

I know they were using, I saw it.

I hope you reported that to management. Buy hey, it's your life.

We are somewhat represented by Scott Tipton. His hometown is 300 miles away and the district includes 29 counties.

Isn't it great to live where you don't have to deal with a lib for days or weeks at a time? Locally, I attribute the misguided votes to the swarms of blm, forest service, fish & wildlife, national monument drones, usda, and so on that infest our county.

You know it. I moved here from the Chicago area over 10 years ago - always knew I belonged in the South. Whenever anyone asks me how I like it, I tell them: "No snow, and no Democrats. That's enough for me!"
