It doesn’t involve lying.

With people from that part of the world it often does. Like the rug merchants who are perpetually going out of business, or the electronics guys selling regular phones as "satellite phones".

I’ll grant you that people lie.

I’ve bartered or haggled over price, but didn’t have to lie at all. I explained what I was willing to pay. They countered. Sometimes I walked away. They generally came running to do the deal.

This is a respected way to do business in some cultures, and I never saw it as lying or anything other than two people coming to an agreement.
