Brian Sandoval Rejected -- Obama's Rumored SCOTUS Pick Nixed Already By Fellow Republicans

Nevada Republican Governor Brian Sandoval has already been rejected as a possible Supreme Court nominee -- by his fellow Republicans. According to sources who spoke to the Washington Post on Wednesday, President Barack Obama has begun the process of "vetting" the 52-year-old, who has also served as United States District Court judge as well as Nevada attorney general.

But as soon as information leaked to the press that Sandoval was under possible consideration for the U.S. Supreme Court post left vacant by the death on February 13 of Antonin Scalia at age 79, Republicans in the Senate immediately went on record to declare Sandoval a non-starter -- even though his appointment as a U.S. District Court judge sailed through the senate unanimously in 2005.

Sandoval was elected governor of Nevada in 2010. The below video is an excerpt of a speech given by Sandoval at the 2012 Republican National Convention.

The possible pick of Brian Sandoval, a Republican, was puzzling to supporters of Obama even before he was ruled out by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who has previously said that the Senate would refuse to hold confirmation hearings on any Obama nominee. McConnell said through a spokesperson that he "didn't say the Senate would act 'if' it was a certain type of nominee."

Sandoval, the first Latino to hold statewide office in Nevada, is generally looked upon as a "moderate" within the Republican party, but nonetheless holds positions that would be anathema to most Democrats.

According to a report compiled by the liberal Think Progress political site, Sandoval has argued that the Affordable Care Act, the "Obamacare" heath care reform law, is “unconstitutional” and that the Supreme court should "hold the ACA invalid in its entirety."

Nonetheless, Sandoval implemented many provisions of the ACA in Nevada, including the expansion of the state's Medicaid program that was resisted by most Republican governors.

On labor issues, Sandoval signed a law that allowed schools to pay less than prevailing wages to construction workers, and proposed a reform of the state's collective bargaining process that Nevada union leaders blasted as "labor Armageddon."

But Sandoval ended up signing labor legislation that was agreed to as "reasonable" by unions. And though he opposed Obama's policy to save about 5 million undocumented immigrants from deportation, he refused to join other Republican governors in a lawsuit to overturn those policies.

Regardless, Senate Republicans said Wednesday that they would refuse to even consider a Sandoval nomination by Obama.

They need to invoke the "Obama rule":

Sandoval is a Climate Change Denier.

Translation: He's pro-abortion and pro 'gay marriage'.

Prevailing wages equals union wages under the Davis Bacon Act.

How stupid to even comment on the guy when there is supposed to be no Senate action on any nominee.

Since this is a presidential election year, it is the right and duty of the American people to weigh in on Justice Scalia’s replacement. This is a rare yet crucial exercise in pure democracy.

It is an absolute disgrace that democrats seek to deprive Americans of this opportunity to participate in such a crucial decision.

Yup. These asshole Republican politicians should not be discussing the topic.

It's a trap and they're getting sucked into it!

Suggest an hispanic-check. Next up will be a black. Or that indian guy. By the time they’re finished, they’ll “float” a name from every special interest group in the country in order to “prove” that republicans are racist against just about everyone. More of the same from obama-the politics of division 24/7.

Right. Our position is: we don’t know who obama is suggesting and we’re really not even interested. We’re not moving on anyone he nominates, no matter who it is, under any circumstances. This is for the American people to decide, not politicians. So I have no comment on what you’re asking me.

What's going to be funny is when we all realize that the Justices are not so much liberal and conservative as pro-business and window-dressing.

The liberal window-dressing is so we think it's conservative vs. liberal, when it's really crony capitalists vs. everyone else.

So now that there are supposedly four conservatives and four liberals on the court, how is the court going to be able to support their crony capitalist puppetmasters?

One of those "liberals" is going to have to come up with some clever reasoning in order to get a 5-3 decision in favor of cronyism.

Will there be one stuckee, maybe the oldest who can retire at the appropriate time claiming advancing senility? Or will the "liberals" divide the responsibility?

“Sandoval, the first Latino to hold statewide office in Nevada, is generally looked upon as a “moderate” within the Republican party,”

That’s an understatement. His picture shows up in the dictionary under RINO.

They want to start the process and then they will either have a Dem produce the poison, or they will release dirt that will make him withdraw.

Just trying to trick the repubs into considering a nominee -- something they unequivocally said they wouldn't do. Then Obama can do something to make Sandoval to withdraw from consideration and say, "He didn't work, but since you are apparently considering nominees after all, I hereby nominate Deval Patrick..."

Judge Janice Rogers Brown. Repeat after me-—Judge Janice Rogers Brown. Unless you count me, I haven’t heard or read one conservative-libertarian journalist, talk show host, or blogger so much as mention her name. McConnell or Grassley should tell Obama or state publicly, “The Republican majority in the Senate will unanymously support the nomination of Judge Janice Rogers Brown. You have an historic opportunity to nominate the first African-American woman to the Supreme Court.”

I’m honestly confused.

Sandoval is definitely the best we can hope for under Obama. If Hillary wins, and that is a real possibility, then her nominees would be much worse as well.

Why not try to get Sandoval seated?
