Romney was very timid, and unwilling to actually put up a real fight. But, his “internal polling” actually told him he was winning, just like McCain’s internal polling showed that he had an excellent chance to win Pennsylvania (that’s why he and Palin spent so much time in PA.)
Trump will put up a scorched earth campaign against Clinton. Even on MSNBC they were talking about what Clinton’s chances were after six months during which Trump will be endlessly insulting her, and attacking her in every way possible. From what I saw just on that short episode of MSNBC, I could tell that they were very concerned about having to go up against Trump.

Trump is getting away with all the insults and aggressiveness because Americans, both Republicans and Democrats, fully realize they've been screwed.
It's why Cruz isn't going anywhere. The "Goody-Two-Shoes Bible and Constitution Roadshow" was a terrible campaign strategy in this environment.
Americans are scared to death of what's happened to the culture, their economy, and the country. They don't want a lecture on the Constitution.
