I was a subscriber back in the 80s...drew some funny looks at school!
I wonder if their past issues have ever been digitized? They should be...there was probably plenty of BS (or at least “enhancement”) in stories, but there was plenty of good material (historic and humerous) there too. One of the funniest stories I read back in the day was a “history” of American rations, particularly centered on C-rats from Vietnam.
One of the funniest stories I remember from the “I was there” column involved some Navy divers assigned to shoot film underwater of a nuclear sub as it passed by them.
The description of their naivety as they get ready, and how they wanted a really good shot, then the abject terror of being next to a giant speeding sub a few feet away. Of wishing they could scream in the regulator....
It was a laugh out loud. And great weapons tests. There was an awful lot of underlying fun and humor in it.
and then roiling in the violent wake... and written just the way you’d tell the story in a bar.
I found at least one issue digitized, the last one.
