Maybe because Trump’s support is soft.

“Yeah, I want Trump to win. All the way!”
“Are you going to caucus for him on Saturday?”
“Nah, I got things to do.”

Not open primary, you have to be registered (R) to cacus at least in KY.

He has a lot of volunteers organized to go door-to-door in the days before the caucus, call on the phone, and circulate at the caucuses. Trump is relying more on the big rallies -- he is less experienced. He's going to have to spend more of his hard-earned money if this keeps up going forward.
