“IMO, both types of prisons are needed in this country. Depending on the offense and history of the offender”

Exactly. And I don’t only mean the country club prisons for Martha Stewart. We shouldn’t be mixing non violent types with the MS-13 types. And you shouldn’t be released until you can read the declaration of independence...eloquently.

It does dovetail in with privately owned and operated prisons. You don’t see Ford trying to eliminate cars.

It might work to have a tiered system where inmates earn the right to better occomodations through work, education and behavior.

I once heard a story about an old sickly couple who were struggling to make ends meet and remain independent in their run down shack of a house.

The old man worked as a night watchman at the local museum.

One day, while siting on the porch reading the evening paper before he went off to his 3rd shift security job, the old guy turned to his wife and joked, “Ya know, sometimes I think we might be better off in one of these new resort style prisons. Food, entertainment, recreation, medical care...really anything you need.”

Well his old wife fell silent for a moment, then replied in a half serious half joking manner, “I know what ya mean Pa, maybe we should try breaking into prison!”

A long silence followed. They turned and looked at each other quietly. Big grins began to form across their wrinkled faces. “are you thinking what I'm thinking?”

He nodded affirmatively. Over the next week they began to assemble a plan to “break in” to the newly constructed prison on the island where prisoners are not locked in cells because the cold surrounding water serves as a barrier to escape.

The plan soon evolved. They would create a clumsy scheme to steal a display of precious Egyptian jewels recently loaned to the museum. It would be the perfect non violent crime that was sure to qualify them to live together in peace and harmony on their island prison.

But then something unexpected happened. Half way through their planning, it dawned on them...they might be able to actually get away with it!

“One 4th of all prisoners on the planet are here.”

Cuba, China, North Korea, and their ilk, are countries that are prisons. So, the “we put too many people in prison” accusation is meaningless when you recognize many nations on this earth as prisons themselves.

It is not prisons that are to blame for recidivist rates, it is lefty “self esteem” programs and the left treating criminals as little snowflakes that are not responsible for their own decisions.

Criminals have the most self-esteem, they feel they deserve whatever they want so they take it, and their fragile inflated self-esteem is so easily bruised that any slight (or perceived slight) is met with violence. If they have a healthy self-respect those problems and criminal behaviors go away.

The left excuses criminal/violence behavior by excusing the thug by saying their daddy didn’t hug them enough (if they knew their daddy), or mama didn’t hug them enough, besides, it is poverty to blame, not their own decision to act criminally and with violence: “He was a good boy that luved his mama, was starting community college, helped old ladies across the street and was an aspiring rapper. . . .”

Of course, the glorification of prison thug/gang life in the black culture that greatly affects prison life and criminal behavior.

Or the lumber companies not planting new trees. Supposedly Norway’s recidivism rate is around 20%, after very briefly looking around. Of course they are dealing with different cultural problems. I’ve seen national US rates from 40% to high 70% rates after five years of release.

I have no idea if the prisons are actually the cause, but I know if I had to pick I would invest in US prison systems if one were to look at it as a purely financial long term investment.
