Russian aircraft will contine to fly tens of missions a day against targets in Syria despite a pull out of forces announced by Vladimir Putin earlier this week, military officials in Moscow have said.
Russian airstrikes are supporting a regime offensive against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isil) around the ancient city of Palmyra, generals said on Friday, in an apparent signal that the Kremlin will not relinquish direct military support for Bashar Assad despite pulling out the bulk of its forces in Syria.
"Conditions have been created for the encirclement and definitive defeat of Isil armed formations in Palmyra, Lt. Gen. Sergei Rudskoi, the head of Russias National Defence Control Centre, told journalists at a briefing in Moscow.
"Government troops and patriotic forces with the support of the Russian air force are carrying out a large-scale operation to liberate Palmyra," he said. "On average Russian planes are flying 20 to 25 combat sorties each day.

They took away targets....Must have heard something. Yeh, we’re that stupid.
They were on their way home to Mother Russia
and just happened to lighten their load over the enemy.
Yeah , that's the plan .. !
Who was it , who said , “ Never let the enemy know your timetable “ ?
Oh yeah ! It wasn't Obozo leaving Afghanistan !
..and then the Taliban returned , in force !
Oh well, I guess the Russian bomber pilots aren’t listening to Putin’s ‘cease fire’ order.
Considering that there are now S-400s in Syria, I doubt anyone, including the United States, will try to hold Putin to his word.
Atta boy Pooty. Keep stackin’ ‘em up.
Any of many good leaders, most recently a presidential candidate.
There is one S-400 battery located at the Russian held air field in Latakia. Offshore there are several Russian ships with S-300PMU batteries.
Most of the heavy lifting will be done by the latest Russian combat Hilos: the Mi-28 and the KA-52 - these have modern defenses against MANPADs while the SU24s and other jets do not. They can also drop bombs when needed. These Hilos are sort of like the US Apache only on steroids and best suited for missions below 7,000 feet.
Putin never said it wold be a complete withdrawal rather a draw down. Assad may remain but only as long as it suits Russian interests.
Oh well, I guess the Russian bomber pilots arent listening to Putins cease fire order.
They’re just pissed Lurch didn’t send James Taylor over quickly enough.
