Now and again I will find myself in Portsmouth, NH. Invariably, down at the waterfront will be a mountain of "scrap" metal. I mean a pile two stories high and a block long. The huge ship will be sidled up to the dock at the pile. The crane just keeps on moving, picking up bunches of the metal with the big magnet, moving that pile off the dock and into the ship. I'm not stupid. I knew what was going on. I would turn to Honey, and say "do you realize what's going on over there?" She would reply, "you're an idiot". Finally, one day I wrote down the name of the ship. I googled it. It turns out that you can track ships online (just like you can track flights). There was my ship, where it had come from, where it was, and where it was headed. Yes sirree bob, a slow boat to China. I have heard the same thing is going on on the West Coast.
We all knew years and years ago. We'd see a japanese car (a relatively new phenomenon) that, while still fairly new would develop a small rust spot 'out of the blue'. We'd say, "you know they use recycled metal over there". That phenomenon has gone global. We are screwed.
I certainly wish Presudent Trump would look into this, i’m a buyer on the thrifty side but its becoming more obvious that China made goods are NOT good enough for America!
They are crap! We cannot have a better society if this crap continues, its like trying to be an athlete and living on cardboard!
I sold high end clothing, bags, shoes, and jewelry on eBay for years. It was all totally authentic and I made pretty good money. Then eBay let the Chinese list all their fake crap on regular eBay. Most people can’t tell the difference between the good fake stuff and the authentic stuff so they undercut all the prices. If you turned their crap in as fake eBay would pull it but it just showed up again. Now eBay is just full of totally fake AA bags, watches, shoes, etc. you have to really know what you are doing to buy something on there now.
I’ve worked with Chinese companies in the past. Not something that was enjoyable.
I have a small manufacturing shop. From time to time I get a customer that wants a prototype part made that will have me sign NDAs Non competes, and all the other legaleze documents. Then they will admit they are going to send production to China. I tell them every time. DON’T DO IT!!! They will rip you off and your product will be on every shelf in every Harbor Freight and Walmart in the nation.
Sure enough, they don’t pay attention and their products are simply copied and sold to someone else. If you’re a company like Apple you have the muscle to fight them. But when you’re just Joe Shmoe from Wichita you’re out of luck.
My company is building a manufacturing facility in China.
The new one here is still way behind on making product.
It wouldn’t surprise me that we would be shut down and China becomes the hub. There would be a nice new building in the woods that could be a museum.
It's become something of a sport spotting the real stuff from the Chinese fakes. I've gotten pretty good at ID'ing counterfeit Gibson Les Paul guitars.
Thanks for the article but it’s not really news. Everyone knows China steals the hell out of American intellectual property.
Products are not marked properly. the guy who took them off found the Made in China stamp. It was microscopic.
I saw at walmart a tv antenna made in china with a huge label and flag that read “DESIGNED IN THE USA”.
LOL bump
Keep at it. If you are in an experienced engineering or similar position you can make a fortune working with the Chinese. They can not engineer themselves out of a wet paper bag. They will pay a fortune to gain your knowledge if you’re willing to live there for a while.
