This is stupid. I have been on many of those painkillers over the years and was always able to stop taking them.

Same here. I’m prescribed five 10Mg Vicodin per day, some days I take them, some days I don’t. When the pain gets really bad, I take them.
People who get addicted generally have personality issues and stresses that are relieved by the substance. They continue to take it because they want to, not because there's anything magical in the substance that forces them to indulge in a complex pattern of behaviors. They want to do it because, in their particular cases, it either makes them feel good, or prevents them feeling bad.
Same here. I wouldn't be able to get out of bed, much less work without Norco. Even had a doctor tell me there is a huge difference between being addicted and being dependant.
This entire seemingly national conversation about this topic needs to remove old people from the equation. It's a TOTALLY different deal with old people. It's not the same. Young people do not understand the pains in aging and that come with age (I know I didn't have a clue for decades.) To lump the elderly into this conversation is just wrong. Though I do think it's intentional. When you control someone's pain, you control them. I think it's part of Obama (and those like him) plan for the elderly. Suffer enough chronic pain and you'll choose death over it.
