Donald Trump: Don't change abortion laws
CBS News ^ | April 1, 2016 | Jake Miller

Posted on 04/01/2016 4:29:09 PM PDT by ConservativeTeen

Donald Trump said Friday that he believes the laws regulating abortion should stay as they are, but he doesn't disagree with the proposition that abortion is murder.

The GOP frontrunner lit a fresh controversy this week with his shifting responses to a question on abortion policy. He said during an MSNBC town hall on Tuesday that he'd like to see the practice banned, and that women who undergo it should face "some form of punishment." But he quickly backtracked, explaining in a statement that while he believes it should be banned, the punishment should be levied on abortion providers, not the women seeking abortions.

Trump sought to clarify his position during an interview on Friday with "Face the Nation" moderator John Dickerson. The interview will air, in part, on Sunday's broadcast.

"A question was asked to me. And it was asked in a very hypothetical. And it was said, 'Illegal, illegal,'" Trump explained. "I've been told by some people that was an older line answer and that was an answer that was given on a, you know, basis of an older line from years ago on a very conservative basis."

Asked how he'd like to change the law to further restrict access to abortions, Trump replied, "The laws are set now on abortion and that's the way they're going to remain until they're changed."

"I would've preferred states' rights," he added. "I think it would've been better if it were up to the states. But right now, the laws are set....At this moment, the laws are set. And I think we have to leave it that way."

"Do you think abortion is murder?" Dickerson asked.

"I have my opinions on it, but I'd rather not comment on it," Trump replied.

"You said you were very pro-life," Dickerson followed up. "Pro-life means that...abortion is murder."

"I mean, I do have my opinions on it. I just don't think it's an appropriate forum," said Trump.

"But you don't disagree with that proposition, that it's murder?" Dickerson asked.

"No, I don't disagree with it," Trump eventually replied.

The back-and-forth over abortion wasn't the only political controversy involving Trump this week. He also stood by his campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, who's been charged with battery after allegedly grabbing a reporter's arm during a public event last month. And he suggested on Tuesday that he no longer feels bound by his pledge to support the eventual GOP nominee, complaining that the party has treated him "very unfairly."

Despite a chorus of critics assailing both moves, Trump told "Face the Nation" it hasn't been the worst week of his campaign.

"I think I've had many bad weeks and I've had many good weeks. I don't see this as the worst week in my campaign," he said. "But certainly, I've had some weeks, and you've been reporting on them, where that was the end. And then the next week, you see poll numbers where they went up and everybody's shocked."

"So yeah, people want to stop me because I'm leading by a lot," he added.

Yes and I believe Trump will appoint conservative justices.

Isn’t it sad how Cruzers use these dead babies as political footballs trying to score points?

The Texas Primary was much earlier in the campaign cycle that its been in many years, so its; not a valid comparison. Has Trump broken 50% in any state yet?

The truth is that most of Trump's supporters have ignored his inconsistent history on abortion, healthcare, taxes, and gun control. Trump has simply not thought through these positions because these stances are new to him.

Absolutely. It’s mind boggling that people here do not understand national security and economics. Trump has said time and time again, if we don’t have borders, we don’t have a country. Half the FReepers here don’t have a clue.

It’s not 100% complete but pretty accurate about his positions over the last 15 years or more. He did become pro-life around 2001, which is not reflected there.

If anyone wants to know his real, stated, sourced positions with direct quotes, that’s an excellent site.

Majority are stealth operatives. It is very easy to spot them. Especially on threads like this where their responses are canned and over the top. LOL

“Mr. Trump gave an accurate account of the law as it is today and made clear that it must stay that way now — until he is President. Then he will change the law through his judicial appointments and allow the states to protect the unborn. There is nothing new or different here.”

I don’t need a translator. I know exactly what Trump means. He will appoint judicial activists to legislate from the bench.

Yeah, and if the establishment thinks all the Trump supporters are just going to fade away if Trump continues to dominate and be ok with some other loser way behind him, they are living in a fanatsy world. The only way to keep the senate and the house is for everyone to get behind Trump..

I am now pro-life; after years of being pro-choice. (Apr 2011)

Looks more like 2011 and the change was supposedly due to seeing a kid grow up a "Winner" that might have been aborted. I guess it's a good thing that the kid wasn't a LOSER.

Trump is winning all the Red States. Think about that. He hopefully will, but didn't have an organized ground game. He is a private citizen, never ran for office before.

Yet Trumps message is resonating more with voters in Red states over Rubio, Bush or Cruz. Again, think about it. Trump beat Cruz in all the Red states except for Texas. And Trump had a very good showing in Texas.

Trump is from New York. He won Virginia. Cruz would never win Virginia in the general. Cruz couldn't even win Arizona, or Florida, or Alabama, or Georgia, or North or South Carolina, or New Hampshire, or Illinois and on and on.

It is what it is. Hopefully Trump gets a ground game. Trump didn't know the lengths Cruz would go to steal delegates because in all other front running nominees were promoted by the RNC. Trump has received more primary votes than Bush, McCain or Romney. Yet Trump and his voters are being attacked from every angle in an attempt to take out the most popular Republican nominee in modern history. Who does that? We were not expiated the RNC to treat Trump supporters so shabbily and being connived against by the establishment. Why were we not expecting to be stabbed in the back? Because our numbers surpass Bush, McCain and Romney primary numbers and the previous RNC owners never attacked them. We were not expecting to be treated unfairly especially when we have more numbers than our predecessors. It is weird and is a stab in the back in that they never treated any other front runners the way they are treating Trump as the front runner. It is a disgrace.

Georgia Girl, may I stand with you? If it is a State by State matter, then if I disagree with the pro/anti abortion laws,.I can move to a different state. We, here at FR, could then unite and stay focused on First Amendment threats, which to me are the most dangerous to a Republic. If we lose Speech to P.C. Laws, where will this Forum be??

This is why the Abortion issue should have been left up to the states to decide and not made a national issue that ends up being a litmus test for candidates.

This issue just cannot be discussed on either side of the political spectrum with out it being emotional. Logic and rational thought is out the window and it just ends up being chaos.

Trump should just stay his original course and say he will appoint judges to overturn Roe V Wade but should also say he will try and change the law somehow and kick it back to the individual states to make a decision. Anything else is a no win deal for him or anyone else.

Here’s a link from August last year, which states that DJT is pro-life with exceptions:
