Total Bull Shit.

Some White Hatter gave up a million dollar prize to break Apple’s encryption?

Sure they did...

That's why I said "if true." I just cannot believe that this is what happened. . . but it was not a "white hatter," but a black or, as the article says a "Gray Hatter" (no such thing). There are only White or Black hatters. Either they reveal their vulnerabilities to the producers or they sell their vulnerabilities to the highest bidder, regardless of who is paying. . . there is no "gray" area. Either they are working to improve the security or they are a criminal seeking ill gotten gains from other criminals.

The other reason I have for doubting this is the data recovered will be useless in court. Any arrests that ensue from the recovered data will be forever tainted because the provenance will always track back to the dubious unlocking of this iPhone by an unqualified forensic source, one not qualified to testify in court as to his technique, his bone fides, and his other cases in which he has been used. He lacks certification as a forensic IT specialist. Working on the wrong side of the law, anything he does will be tainted with that criminal association. Any competent defense will ask why was he not arrested for breaking Federal Criminal hacking laws? What immunities from other crimes was he granted in exchange? I think any judge would toss the indictments.
