Donald Trump has extended his support in the 2016 presidential race among Republican primary voters to a record 40 percent as the field has narrowed, but he is still locked in a tight battle with Texas Sen. Ted Cruz for dominance, a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll shows.

Trump gets the support of 40 percent of Republican primary voters, while Texas Sen. Ted Cruz gets 35 percent. Ohio Gov. John Kasich, in third place, has the support of 24 percent of GOP primary voters.

The margin of error for Republican primary voters in the poll is +/- 5.6 percent.

In March, Trump led Cruz by three points, 30 percent to 27 percent, with Kasich garnering 22 percent. In February - when Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush and Ben Carson were still in the presidential hunt -- Cruz held a slight advantage over Trump, 28 percent to 26 percent.

Trump outperforms Cruz most decisively among Republicans who do not have a college education (45 percent to 38 percent) and men (42 percent to 35 percent). Cruz thrives among very conservative voters (52 percent to Trump's 40 percent), while Kasich leads among Republicans who describe themselves as moderate or liberal (44 percent to Trump's 33 percent and Cruz's 23 percent).

So 150% more do not want Trump.

Will of the voters is not for Trump.

He has won nothing and is entitled to nothing.

He should focus on winning, not crying like a baby wawa.

hmmm... Trump is in the lead so that means it’s a believable poll. But Cruz is close behind making in unbelievable. Not sure what Trumpsters will do with this one. Very hard to say. Maybe the poll is right with Trump’s #s but wrong with Cruz. Yeah that’s it.

Notice they didn’t give the date in April
Trumps polls skyrocketed and Cruz's dropped in the past 2 weeks so I am guessing “ April” means the first

Cruz LOSES to Trump in ALL the states that HAVE to be won in November, but somehow we’re supposed to believe that he should get the nomination.

GOPe and CRUZbots want to nominate a LOSER to win in November.

Just before every primary NBC/WSJ manages to pull a poll out of their a$$ showing Cruz closing the gap. Right before the SC primary their poll showed Cruz only 3 points behind Trump. They’ll do the same thing next Monday I’m sure.

Another BS NBC/WSJ poll, contradicted by their own Survey Monkey Poll. See the 2 polls released below same day which shows that STILL nobody wants or likes Ted. Got to hand it to you with your incessant propaganda for Cruz. You people don’t stop. But we keep calling you out for the shills you are and the false narratives your advance.

Yeh not buyin it. The other national polls have Trump waaay up over Cruz. If that poll was correct Cruz should have way more states under his belt.

You keep trying that tactic. You realize by using your technique, there’s an even higher percentage of people who don’t want Cruz.

It really makes you look dumb.

Carry on.

Crossover voters. Can’t have those according to the Cruzers because they’re not ideologically pure enough. Someone needs to remind them of two words: Reagan Democrats.

You are a nut. We will see tonight who is wanted when American patriotic voters go to the voting booths today. Those pesky voters always screw Cruz....well except 4 times.

A number of the polls associated with NBC have been outliers. Believe what you want.
