I don’t know about the conservative Christian part, but I can see Prince opposing something as popular in his circles as gay “marriage”, just to troll them. His music was not really my kind of thing, but he was very talented, and an interesting character, to say the least.
I never was a fan, my girlfriend was and we saw him play around 20 years ago and ended up at an after party. Prince remained sober the entire time and if he were not outlandishly dressed, he would have been the most unassuming person at the party.
The show was amazing.
