Austrian far-right party sweeps first round of presidential election

Austria's anti-immigration Freedom Party has secured victory in the first round of presidential elections. Exit polls show Norbert Hofer of the FPÖ winning 36.7 percent of the votes in a landmark win for the party.

The result means that for the first time since 1945, Austria will not have a president backed by either the Social Democrats (SPÖ) or the center-right People's Party (ÖVP).

The two candidates nominated by the ruling parties failed to make it to the runoff to be held on May 22, early exit polls showed.

SPÖ candidate Rudolf Hundstorfer came fourth with over 11 percent, level with ÖVP's Andreas Khol. It is the Freedom Party's best-ever performance at the federal level since its creation after World War II, reflecting the Austrian voters' dissatisfaction with the status-quo.

"Like elsewhere in Europe, we are witnessing the downfall of the traditional parties," political analyst Peter Hajek told the AFP news agency.

It should be noted that the center-right and center-left parties...each got around 11-percent each in this run-up election and there’s disenchantment with their messages to the public.

The Green Party got around 22-percent of the vote and it’s a shocker for the old establishment center-left folks.

One other footnote about this election is that an independent (Irmgard Griss) ran and got 18-percent of the vote. Griss originally offered to run under the Freedom Party (the far-right party in this case) and they noted that she wasn’t “far-right” enough.

If you take what they got already (38-percent), toss in Griss’s 18-percent, and maybe the 11-percent of the center-right folks...it’ll be a 60-percent win for the far-right when the final election comes around in four weeks. It’ll have a wave affect across Germany and France, as their elections approach.

There are at least 4 major parties in Austria (I think) besides this one. To get 36% out of 5 parties is a good showing.

Sounds like Hofer has it in the bag.

But he’s running for president - how much power do presidents have in Austria? Who has the power in Austria and is he up for election?
