Cruz signs copy of Communist Manifesto for Young Man but adds a blunt message

Someone showed up at a Ted Cruz event in Elkhart, Indiana today with a copy of the Communist Manifesto. According to a reporter for the Texas Tribune, the kid, who looked like he could be a college student, asked Cruz to sign his “economic textbook.”

A young man asks Ted Cruz to sign his "economic textbook."

"That… would be the Communist Manifesto," Cruz says, realizing the prank.

Video of the encounter published by WSBT22 shows Cruz paused and said, “You know what, I’ll sign it as well.” The college kid replied, “Ah, you have a good sense of humor.” Here is the note Cruz added to the book:

After handing the book back, Cruz turned to the press, “There you go and for the record the note I wrote on the Communist Manifesto is ‘Millions have suffered because of this.’ Turning back to the student he added, “And I note this as the son of a Cuban immigrant whose family has seen first hand just exactly what Communism has rendered. Cruz then shook the young man’s hand and thanked him for coming out to the rally.

Kudos to Cruz for not falling for the prank and handling it well. You can be sure that if he hadn’t noticed what this was and signed it with something anodyne like ‘Thanks for your support!’ the left would have been giddy over it.

Does Ted Cruz even understand the difference between ‘voters’ and ‘delegates’ he can wheedle?

I gave credit where credit was due and added that I expect any American Presidential Candidate would do the same. I didn’t even get into some of the vile crap about Ted that you Trump haters post about Trump. Leave it and take the Kudos for what Ted saw, and correctly did.

There is no positive energy in backing a statistical loser with voters who engineers a voter-less campaign.

RE: it is what he does that leave me cold.

Exactly what did he do that you object to?

Persecution for the expression of opinions seems to me perfectly logical. If you have no doubt of your premises or your power, and want a certain result with all your heart, you naturally express your wishes in law, and sweep away all opposition. To allow opposition by speech seems to indicate that you think the speech impotent, as when a man says that he has squared the circle, or that you do not care wholeheartedly for the result, or that you doubt either your power or your premises.

But when men have realized that time has upset many fighting faiths, they may come to believe even more than they believe the very foundations of their own conduct that the ultimate good desired is better reached by free trade in ideas -- that the best test of truth is the power of the thought to get itself accepted in the competition of the market, and that truth is the only ground upon which their wishes safely can be carried out.

That, at any rate, is the theory of our Constitution. It is an experiment, as all life is an experiment. Every year, if not every day, we have to wager our salvation upon some prophecy based upon imperfect knowledge. While that experiment is part of our system, I think that we should be eternally vigilant against attempts to check the expression of opinions that we loathe and believe to be fraught with death, unless they so imminently threaten immediate interference with the lawful and pressing purposes of the law that an immediate check is required to save the country.

No kidding. Shame to see how the level of respect and thoughtful debate has fallen so sharply recently.

Funny thing is that during the primary election in Florida, Cubans (2 million) did not know that Rafael Cruz had supported Castro and was a communist sympathizer. And he kept that sentiment up in Texas. Cruz safely settled far outside the Cuban exile community in Miami for good reason, he would have been fed to the sharks in Florida.

In Florida, siding with Fidel Castro is an unforgivable sin much much worse than being a Satanist. If Cruz’s allegiance to Castro had known about in March, Ted would have received a tiny fraction of the small 16% he won in Florida. Just another reason that Ted Cruz will always be unelectable in Florida.

And this explains the Cruz’s bypass of the Cuban Miami community. Too many questions would be asked and all that...

The question is this — is there a Jim Robinson rule that says FR has to be a Trump supporting site?

I think both sides need to take that advice. Both sides are equally negative to each other.

That’s about as logical as saying the statement “Japan bombed Pearl Harbor” is wrong, because it doesn’t also list every single ship that was bombed.

There is a system. Cruz is nearly guaranteed the nomination if Trump fails to win on the first ballot.

Cruz is a wonderful American!

I’d also expect any conservative candidate to write something similar of they were going to sign it all, but I’m afraid that I wouldn’t expect many of them to even realise what it was. I’d bet someone like Lindsey Graham or McCain would sign it without even a glance, and some others wouldn’t recognise what ot was if they did glance at it, unless it was titled in big red letters.
