Washington (CNN)The Supreme Court is in the home stretch of an unexpected term, racing to issue opinions in more than 30 cases, many that were impacted by the sudden death of Justice Antonin Scalia. At the center of it all is Chief Justice John Roberts, facing perhaps one of the the greatest challenges of his 10-plus year tenure -- navigating a series of issues such as abortion access, health care, affirmative action and immigration with a court comprised of four liberal and four conservative justices.

Early in his tenure, Roberts said that promoting unanimity and collegiality were a priority. He's had successes in cases and had more of a bumpy ride in others such as the 5-4 decision upholding Obamacare. How he deals with the possibility of a deadlocked court with the backdrop of a contentious election and the controversy surrounding the nomination of Scalia's replacement could say much about Roberts' leadership. When the court is evenly divided it simply affirms the lower court opinion and sets no national precedent. It's as if the court never even heard the case. "The chief has made clear how much he cares about preserving the court's legitimacy in these polarized times, and this term will be a real test of that vision, " said Jeffrey Rosen, president and CEO of the National Constitution Center, a

Affirm the lower court and let them come back when there’s a full court.

I believe that's what will happen in U. S. v. Texas, as the 4-4 tie will send the case back to the District Court for trial on the merits. Then it will come back up for Round 2, unless President Trump rescinds the DAPA memorandum and renders the matter moot. Or unless Justice Kennedy sides with the liberals and says the case is not reviewable. Which could also happen.

To liberals, compromise means how to get what we want while ctying we are not getting anything.

To republicans it means how can we find a way to lose while lying to our base that we’ve won. Aka Roberts’ “compromise”.

Roberts is a g-d pox on us. Plus the other 4 overt libtard justices.

Remember the unusual meeting of Roberts w/Obama after he won 2008, but before swearing in?

I don’t think Roberts is blackmailed, just in on the plan to ruin USofA.

You could all just follow the constitution and the law instead of twisting everything into a pretzel.

“The judges that the Bushes appointed have been a big disappointment.”

Are you seriously calling Justices Alito and Thomas disappointments?

Think again.
