Program offers college scholarships to immigrant students

Delaware State University is joining with a national scholarship program to increase college opportunities for immigrant students living in the United States without permanent legal status.

Gov. Jack Markell joined school officials and former Washington Post chairman and CEO Donald Graham on Tuesday to announce the historically black school's partnership with TheDream.US, a privately funded scholarship program co-founded by Graham.

TheDream.US is also partnering with Eastern Connecticut University to offer Opportunity Scholarships for students who face barriers to higher education in 16 states.

"In four states, they are banned from some or all state colleges," Graham said. "Even if they pay, the doors are shut. In others, they are barred in practice because the states deny them in-state tuition."

The new scholarship program is aimed at helping students in states where TheDream.US says they are being "locked-out" of college opportunities. Those states are Alaska, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

University President Harry Williams said the scholarship program aligns with the school's mission.

"We have never said 'no' to anyone who wanted to come and get an education," he said.

Under the program, TheDream.US will offer 500 scholarships of up to $20,000 per year, or $80,000 total, for eligible "locked-out" students who have graduated from high school and are covered under a 2012 federal policy known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. That policy allows certain individuals who entered the U.S. before 2007 and before their 16th birthday to receive a renewable, two-year work permit and a Social Security number, which allows them to get a job.

The Dream.US also will make scholarships totaling up to $25,000 over four years available to students of similar immigration status living in Delaware and Connecticut.

Graham indicated that the program could expand to one or two other states in the near future.

Officials noted that no state money is involved, and that both schools have the capacity to accept students under the program without denying enrollment to others.

Sadhana Singh, a rising junior at Trinity Washington University, a private women's college in Washington, D.C., said the Dream.US program is helping her achieve her goal of getting a college education and becoming "part of America."

"I knew that my parents brought me to America for a reason," said Singh, who was born in Guyana and moved with her parents to Georgia when she was 13.

immigrant students living in the United States without permanent legal status.
***************************

That would make them illegal aliens.
They are not immigrants.
Immigrants apply to be Americans, pay their fees, wait their turn, learn the language and comply with the laws.

2012 federal policy known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA.
************************************

This is the illegal amnesty for illegal aliens that Obama enacted illegally.
If we had an opposition party they would have sued to stop this like the states stopped his next illegal amnesty for illegal aliens, DAPA.

Obama essentially enacted the DREAM Act that is not an Act because it never passed Congress. Obama is changing the laws to benefit those breaking them.
The GOP has done nothing to stop him.

The only money I would be willing to spent on these lawbreakers is to send them back home...on China Airlines.

Heehee. Am I evil or what?

Besides, giving scholarships to those illegals would not last long past the first semester in any college. Without being able to read, write/spell English they will get NOWHERE.

They can take ALL THE ENGLISH CLASSES they want but they will be competing against other college students who will outstrip them in all phases...because of the language barrier.
These immigrants think that they know English, but it's a different story ALL TOGETHER living, working, driving and trying to go to school in a MOST foreign country.

They don't know FOREIGN until they live here. It's AIN'T Europe or the middle east...

Hah, I betcha that they don't even KNOW what a "good ole boy" is!

Yeah, they are illegal aliens and going to a black school in a blue state run by Democrats who will likely run a candidate for Congress who openly advocates for Delaware being a ‘sanctuary state’. It’s another case of poor border control dooming a once nice place to live -the refugees from New Jersey and New York and Maryland have overwhelmed the original population.

I lived in DE from ‘70-’77. Pete DuPont’s ‘74 Congressional campaign was the first I volunteered for.
Sad to see what has happened to that state.

My 25 year old grandson tried to enroll for two summer classes today at Oklahoma State. One of them is on-line. Because he has been determined to be out-of-state, even though he attended and graduated from a junior college in Oklahoma for two years, and then worked in Texas for one year to save money so he could finish college, he was told that his tuition for these two classes would be $5,000. Just ludicrous.

You don’t know what you are talking about.

Living in the US without permanent legal status is exactly what it says. To state it more simply - they have temporary visas that have to be renewed occasionally.

Secondly, immigrants do not necessarily apply to be Americans and many do not want to be Americans.

Thirdly, legal immigrants pay taxes and comply with the laws.

I’m not defending or condemning anybody, I just want to put facts straight.

Thank you for referencing that article StCloudMoose. Please bear in mind that the following critique is directed at the article and not at you.

I don’t see federal taxpayer dollars involved with this issue, corrections welcome. So if voters in affected states don’t like their state tax dollars being spend on scholarships for immigrants, legal or illegal, but don’t get off of their couches on election day to protest how their tax dollars are being spent, than that is the voters’ problem.

People here on temporary visas are by definition not immigrants.

Don’t take the courses: they are not worth $5,000. Find an alternative.

We should have nominated Pete DuPont in 1988 instead of GHWB.

He’s not - at least not this summer. He found another job today so between his two jobs he’ll be busy and then can just take them this fall or in the spring with other classes. Can’t believe how much it has changed. I attended Oklahoma University way back when as out-of-state for $1500 a semester which included my dorm housing, food and books.

Too bad he can’t be covered under DACA. Then he would qualify for up to $20,000 aid per year. But he’s just a 25 year old white kid!

Then they are not immigrants. Temporary visas are temporary, they are supposed to go home when they expire.

immigrant visas for farmworkers are usually renewed routinely.

Full disclosure: I have been volunteering at a school for the children of immigrant workers.
