U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry tried Thursday to reassure European banks they wont be penalized for conducting or facilitating business with Iran, as he worked to address Tehrans grievance that businesses are still staying away despite the nascent nuclear deal.
At an unusual meeting in London, the top U.S. diplomat joined Britains top commerce official to challenge what Kerry called misinterpretations or mere rumors about U.S. sanctions on Iran, the most sweeping of which were lifted in exchange for Iran rolling back its nuclear program. The list of banks whose leaders attended was a Whos Who of powerful financial institutions based in Europe, including HSBC, Deutsche Bank, Barclays and BNP Paribas.
We want to make it clear that legitimate business, which is clear under the definition of the agreement, is available to banks, Kerry told reporters after the meeting. As long as they do their normal due diligence and know who theyre dealing with, theyre not going to be held to some undefined and inappropriate standard here.

The US laws on the books still make commerce with Iran a crime (as it should be.)
When Iran ceases to be the world center for terrorism, then commerce should be allowed and even encouaged, but not before.

Dear European banks,
I’d strongly suggest you pay attention to the US political campaigns, you might want to continue the path you’re on, and just ignore the buffoon who shows up a week after with a singer-songwriter to make you feel better.

Our administration works to "address Tehran's grievances" while Iran continues to proclaim that America is their only enemy and threaten to shut down the Straits of Hormuz.
Liberals are in hog-heaven seeing America appeasing and cajoling enemies who hate it.

Kerry says we won’t enforce our laws. Congress, where are you?

So, Iran, which kills homosexuals, for sport, is fine, but North Carolina, which tries to keep men out of women’s restrooms, is wrong.

Of course they won't, why would they be punished for lawful acts? Wise financial institutions who might be harmed by "punishment" would be well advised to rely on their own legal advisors rather than Kerry/Obama as to whether their actions are legal.
