BARCELONA, Venezuela - By morning, three newborns were already dead.
The day had begun with the usual hazards: chronic shortages of antibiotics, intravenous solutions, even food. Then a blackout swept over the city, shutting down the respirators in the maternity ward.
Doctors kept ailing infants alive by pumping air into their lungs by hand for hours. By nightfall, four more newborns had died.
"The death of a baby is our daily bread," said Dr. Osleidy Camejo, a surgeon in the nation's capital, Caracas, referring to the toll from Venezuelas collapsing hospitals.
The economic crisis in this country has exploded into a public health emergency, claiming the lives of untold numbers of Venezuelans. It is just part of a larger unraveling here that has become so severe it has prompted President Nicolás Maduro to impose a state of emergency and has raised fears of a government collapse.

"I doubt that anywhere in the world, except in Cuba, there exists a better health system than this one," Mr. Maduro said.

The Venezuelan leader was often marginalized as a radical. But his brand of socialism achieved real economic gains
Ain’t Socialism great?
What a horrible article...
Libtards must be aghast...while reading the paper of record
..
Not one word in the article on how evil capital pigs caused this tragedy...
socialism works...just ask the Bernouts...
Yes, socialism works. Be healthy or die.
Strange how socialists believe the opposite that all can be saved. Well, with the caveat that the products of botched abortions will be clubbed or left not breathing.
Aw, the dichotomies of the leftist brain are always too much to contemplate, even with twice the IQ of the average Syrian.
As children perish in their care.
They need to hang Maduro in the public square in Caracas, and then move out in ever increasing concentric circles killing all of his people, including any soldiers who put up a fight.
Vote for socialism, get socialism. Sort of funny in a not funny way.
The problem is Venezuela’s leaders always thought there would be boom times and never saved for a rainy day.
With the world glutted in oil, Venezuela can no longer earn enough to meet it own needs much less than to pay its outstanding debts.
Now its basically a matter of time before the country dies. All they’re doing now is rearranging the musical chairs on the decks of the Titanic.
Strange that the Times has closed comments on this article.
It has to be said people who vote for their pied pipers get what they deserve.
But mass starvation and wholesale societal collapse is seldom sufficient to shake people off their delusions.
Venezuela’s plight is an example of what to keenly avoid here.
I have shown the photos of the breadlines, and empty shelves to my kids. This awful photo of the hospital is far more cutting to the soul.
I suppose we have all stood in line, so perhaps the idea of standing in line (although five hours just for a loaf of bread) doesn’t seem that far outside of normal.
However, we have also most all spent time in a hospital room or doctor’s office. And the image shown is so far out of our realm of normality.
This is what Communism is really like.
Poverty is truly equal - when every one dies.
Why would one care about abundance... you’re not long for the world anyway.
And some idiots here still believe we could do a better job of it than the Russians or the Venezuelans.
Yeah, sure.
You might also want to point out that Barcelona, Venezuela was once considered a vacation paradise on the Gulf Coast ... blessed with an almost perfect climate, five star hotels, picturesque tourist attractions, lots of small shops, cathedrals, and a boardwalk ... and now this.
Venezuela was once the richest and most prosperous country in Latin America.
Even parts of Africa are now better off than Venezuela.
This is why you dont let socialists run things.
Lots of innocent people die.
When you vote for socialism, often you actually get socialism.
That is what they are all getting right now. Hardcore.
As in no toilet paper, no food and no medicine.
Exactly the state of affairs in present-day Venezuela.
