TRUMP CAMPAIGN PLANS COLLEGE OVERHAUL
Accuracy in Academia ^ | May 23, 2016 | Deborah Lambert

Who knew that the Trump campaign would be getting involved in higher education policy this year? Sam Clovis, a tenured economics professor and Trump campaign co-chair, recently noted that their objectives include getting the government out of student lending, requiring colleges to share in student loan risk, and discouraging borrowing by liberal arts majors.

Clovis told Inside Ed that the mere mention of these policy proposals has sent some Washington graybeards into a swivet, and "he expects some higher education leaders to react the same way when Trump outlines these ideas during the fall campaign."

Some of the ideas under consideration could be "revolutionary," Clovis said. Among the proposals currently being prepared are the following:

• A complete shift of the current federal student loan system to a market-based and market-driven system that would be run by private banks

• Remediation programs for those unprepared for college-level work would be renamed "student success programs"

• Colleges would subject applicants to greater scrutiny and only admit those who show promise of graduating and finding jobs within a reasonable time frame

• There would be less emphasis on parent contributions and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and more of "a partnership" between the student, the bank and the college

Saying that all colleges should have skin in the game and share the risk associated with student loans, Clovis noted that many in Congress already voiced support for that idea, adding that "the risk needs to be substantial enough to change the way colleges decide whether to admit students, and which programs they offer."

The Donald & The Deans. Oh, if ever there was a crowd that needed to hear the words, "you're fired," this is it.

Excellent and needed. I can here the screams of racism now, but Trump should stand firm on this.

I think most deans would like to fix the system, but it’s grown to such a problem and with so many problems....it’s considered unfixable. It’s like talking about tenure. No dean in the US can remake the tenure process. Go talk about the ratio of professors to actual college employees. Go talk about the power of the NCAA over the method that the college operates under.

ALLOW COLLEGE DEBT TO BE DISCHARGED IN BANKRUPTCY.

Have no federal guarantees for student debt.

And watch college tuition drop like a stone.

I love it. Trump can’t discuss all the areas he intends to address, but this indicates he’s planning on sweeping changes to bring public policy back in balance regarding education.

[admit those who show promise of graduating and finding jobs within a reasonable time frame] That takes care a big problem.

What about ending government scholarships for illegals and foreign students? That should be done by private organizations also.

Get some of the useless blood-sucking lefties off the college payroll, and a degree would be cheaper AND useful.

The Dems want the taxpayers to pay off everyone’s student loan, but not make any changes to the system that caused the problem in the first place.

Trump is aiming at the root cause of the college loan crisis—he wants to fix what caused the problem.

If you want to sum up the core difference between Trump and left, there it is.

I would go one further on this. Colleges must prove that the degrees they are offering:

1.) That there is a real quantitative demand for these degrees
2.) That the graduate can actually make a living off of this degree.

No more degrees for “Transgendered Eskimo Feminist Vegetarian Studies”

From 2000 till now inflation was low yet colleges paid there staff’s big increases and because students could rack up big government loans the student debt is now crushing them.

Not that Colleges needed to increase tuition 5% per annum but they got away with it without public outcry’s about price gouging.

We need the Government to jawbone down the tuition.

IIRC, school loan funding in the 60’s and 70’s was via the 1958 National Defense Education Act. You had to be pursuing a technical education that had a defense and therefore National Security benefit. That was the basis of the Constitutional authority for the Feds to be spending taxpayer money on education. Liberal Arts was not part of it. Not sure of the Constitutional basis for the current scheme and I doubt there is one.

No dean in the US can remake the tenure process. Go talk about the ratio of professors to actual college employees.

Couple this with the idea about "Colleges would subject applicants to greater scrutiny and only admit those who show promise of graduating and finding jobs within a reasonable time frame," and "a partnership" between the student, the bank and the college," and an interesting synergy emerges.

If students cannot receive college loans for traditional liberal doctrinal "_______ studies" courses that don't lead to actual jobs, then these tenured professors will have to find a way to get their students to pay for these courses themselves, or the courses will be dropped from the catalog due to lack of demand.

Though Donald Trump has his shortcomings, upsetting the liberal/Leftist applecart isn’t one of them. This man is a blessing bestowed on this country by G-d, and we should be thankful.

Think of the literally hundreds of billions of dollars WASTED on “education” for people who never had a chance to get a job that would allow the repayment of their loans. Think of the literally millions of people EACH YEAR who are brain-washed into believing the liberal/Leftist claptrap spewed by anti-American professors intent on destroying the very system that provides for them to be well-paid leeches on society.

It is about time - thank you, Donald!

So if I want a MS in TEFVS and I'm willing to pay for it the government is going to stop the school from offering me the program?
