Patty Ris doesn't have a favorite seat in the dining room at the Deupree House, a senior living facility in Cincinnati, where she recently took up residence.

But it turned out she picked the best one possible during a meal this week.

Though she didn't know it at the time, sitting beside her was Henry Heimlich, inventor of the first-aid procedure designed to dislodge an obstruction from a choking person's airway with a wraparound bear hug from behind and some abdomen squeezing, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

The identity of her fellow diner could have gone unnoticed, but fate intervened.

Heimlich is the uncle of Anson Williams, “Potsie” on “Happy Days”.

My sister used the Heimlich maneuver and saved me from choking on a piece of turkey. It’s a horrible feeling. I thought I was a goner. My brother was sitting next to me and kept saying, “Are you OK? Are you OK?”

I read this story earlier today. This man’s technique has saved untold numbers of lives. It is an elegant bookend to his life that he got to perform it on another.

I had to do the Heimlich on my son once. To this day, he will not eat the food that he choked on.

Wow. . .I have one for you as well.

My mother and I were in attendance at a Republican Banquet many years ago. Sitting around the table everyone was enjoying their meal when all of a sudden my mother noticed the elderly lady sitting next to her was really in distress. George Ryan, who was sitting at the head table and saw the problem literally, jumped off the stage and came to the lady’s aid with the Heimlich maneuver. You won’t believe what came out of the woman’s mouth. Half of a baked potato!. . .Also her teeth. . .She had had a little too much to drink and she also admitted these were relatively new teeth. My mother who was trying to assist ended up with the potato and teeth in her hands. It was no small potato either. I couldn’t believe it. George Ryan said that someone had helped his wife one time in a movie theatre and that he was forever grateful.

He’d better brush up on the technique. See post #11. It would get him some votes.

I saved my six year old son when he chose to swallow a slice of hot dog whole. I saw it happen, saw the classic hand to the throat and wide open mouth and asked him if he could breathe. He shook his head no, and I popped him off his chair, asked him again then did the move. The hot dog shot across the room. It was all over before Mr G even realized what happened.

Scared the spit out of me, and I made sure all baby sitters knew how to do it from then on.

I got to thank Dr. Heimlich personally because my sister had to do the maneuver on me.......it was BRAND NEW, so he asked me to write him a letter detailing it for his files....I did!
