As written many decades ago: pilots walk around all smug like they know about something better than sex. It’s especially maddenly that they do.

What a loss. Bill Gordon did an impressive job all the way. No one was hurt and it looks like he saved the plane from major damage. But what a loss...may he rest in His Peace.
More here.

Thanks for the link.
Probably some kind of engine failure.
Looks like he did everything right but got trapped in the cockpit. Maybe the water landing jammed the canopy? Or would it be SOP to try and perform a water landing with the canopy already opened?

My guess would be canopy open for ditching.
Otoh, his first priority is to fly the airplane and if the canopy wasn't open, he might not have had time to open the canopy in addition to his low altitude emergency flying chores.
Otherwise, I think the two P-47 ditching dangers would be being knocked a bit loopy on impact, combined with the P-47 turned anchor sinking too fast for him to recover from the impact, unstrap and get out.

Yes, it doesn't look bad. It's a shame the Pilot didn't make it. Here's some more recovery photos:

Good video.
7 out of 10 Fighter Aces in the Euopean Theater flew Thunderbolts.
Pilots were flying 3 missions every day towards the end of the war.
The Thunderbolt could reach near supersonic speed in a dive without breaking up.

The P-51 gets all the glory, but I love the “Jug.”

Me too. The Jug was a tough bird and a real workhorse.
