El Centro, California bills itself as one of Southern California’s “most promising new commercial and industrial regions.” But it had a 20.1 percent unemployment rate in April, by far the highest of the 387 U.S. metropolitan areas surveyed by the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

That 20.1 percent unemployment rate is more than four times the national unemployment rate of 5.0 percent (seasonally adjusted).

The only other metropolitan area to come close to El Centro’s jobless rate was Yuma, Arizona, where the unemployment rate was 18.7 in April. El Centro and Yuma, both near the Mexican border, are located in contiguous counties. …

My guess, if you take the labor participation rate into consideration, true unemployment in the area is 40%_50%.

You’re doing a fine job, Obama.

It's a farm. A big, hot farm. With lots of machines doing the work Mexicans used to do. :)

Not only that...

The El Centro area has many farming plots, where carrots, lettuce, and other crops are produced, and therefore the El Centro economy is subject to seasonal variations like other farming areas. Between November and March in winter periods, El Centro-area farmers harvest lettuce for $8–10 per hour. During March the harvest moves to the north and is no longer in El Centro; in previous eras farmers migrated, while in the first decade of the 21st century many collect unemployment benefits during the summer. Worked down there for a while. Many years ago.

Every morning a rank odor would drift over the city. From where exactly i cant say but it was most likely livestock related.

The locals all claimed to be unaware of it.

Yep. Out in the middle of nowhere surrounded by desert and now “solar” farms as much as the old fashioned type.

If anyone believes that figure they are a moron or a Democrat (I repeated myself).
