There was little support among Swiss politicians for the idea and not a single parliamentary party came out in favour, but the proposal gathered more than 100,000 signatures and was therefore put to the vote under the Swiss popular initiative system. Critics of the measure said that disconnecting the link between work done and money earned would have been bad for society. But Che Wagner from the campaign group Basic Income Switzerland, argued before the vote that it would not be money for nothing. "In Switzerland over 50% of total work that is done is unpaid. It's care work, it's at home, it's in different communities, so that work would be more valued with a basic income."

The Swiss have a more limited government than the US, and they have far fewer multi-generational welfare slugs and brain-dead socialists than we do.
Paradise...thwarted by the Gnomes of Zurich!
Notice that the campaigners for such programs call it “Basic Income” now rather than what they used to call it, “Citizen’s Income”.
What's this, common sense?
And Switzerland does just fine without the EU.
But Che Wagner from the campaign group Basic Income Switzerland,
What the heck??? Somebody is going by the name “Che”??? Really????
Do they really like the association with Che Guevara???
I find it hard to believe that this is someone’s given name. Someone has chosen to go by the nickname Che.
“The Basic Income Initiative received just 23.1% of the vote in Sundays referendum, compared with 76.9% against.”
I wonder what the vote would be should such an initiative been held in California. I would think the two biggest lobby groups in favor of the initiative would be the government of Mexico and Western Union.
“I find it hard to believe that this is someones given name. Someone has chosen to go by the nickname Che.”
His brother Attila gave it to him.
I find it terrifying that 23% voted for the proposal, indeed that it was even seriously considered. It ought to have been defeated by a twenty-to-one margin so no one would dare try again.
They also are not big on taking immigrants from Muslim terrorist supporting countries just because the United Nations assigns them a numerical quota.
Zurich is the 2nd most expensive city in the world and Geneva is the 4th most expensive. If people are having trouble stretching a dollar, Switzerland is not the place they should live.
They also have a massively smaller population base and non-replacement level birth rate.
For anyone who has never been to Switzerland....it has two extremes at work.
First, cites, towns and villages are maintained and in presentable order. You don’t find ghetto-like streets or house-trailer parks. But to reach that plateau, you have to spend a fair amount of state-money (tax revenue). Everyone can be proud of their landscape, their city, and their life.
Second, the general cost of living is such....that you really can’t sit around or depend on the state welfare system to carry you unless you are willing to live at the absolute bottom of society.
People live in a Disney-land-like setting, but they are paying for it daily.
What a bunch of selfish pigs. Don’t they know that free government money will stimulate their economy?
Hmm... wonder who this person was named for... or is it an affected name.
Well, of COURSE it failed. . .
After all, EVERYBODY knows, that when you get Money for Nothing, you also need Chicks for Free.
And the Swiss are not in Dire Straits. . .
(evil grin)
For sure. But I would think the fiercest advocate would be the Obama Regime (that's the USG for those of you in Rio Linda).
“Pas d’argent, pas de Suisse”
