Panama Canal is a big deal again. (Carter gave it away in 1977)
CNBC | 5/9/2016 | Memphis Moe

Posted on 06/09/2016 1:37:41 PM PDT by Memphis Moe

"A century after transforming global trade and markets, the Panama Canal is about to revamp world trade once again.

On June 26 the canal is scheduled to reopen after a massive project costing more than $5 billion that will allow bigger ships to pass through the 102-year-old waterway, doubling cargo capacity.

U.S.-based businesses are recognizing the new growth opportunities. Many logistics experts predict the expansion of the so-called Panamex may shift international trade routes, allowing ships to reach Asia from the U.S. Gulf Coast more than two weeks faster than going east through the Suez Canal."

Gave it away to a nation that didn’t exist before building ever started.

Technically he just chose not to renew the lease. Not really much Trump or anybody else can do can do about it, at least not until it’s up for lease again.

It’s a new, second Panama canal.

That's 1/3 the cost of the Big Dig (Boston tunnel), half the price of a super collider and 1/4 the cost of the Chunnel. Sounds like a bargain to me.

My Dad was one of the last dozen civilians stationed there to leave the base before it was turned over to the Panamanians,

Follow the money.
Taxpayers paid $200 million US dollars to Panama, which enabled them to pay off an $85 million loan to Jimmah Cahta’s buddy, Sol Linowitz’ bank.
Don’t know who Linowitz is? He negotiated the treaty to pay Panama to take the canal.

“Gave it away to a nation that didn’t exist before building ever started.”

Not quite.

The US engineered Panama’s secession from Columbia so that the US could build the canal and control the Canal Zone.

Globalist John Danforth (Senator from Missouri) was an early supporter of the giveaway. He helped spearhead the deal through the Senate (required a 2/3 majority for the donation to Panama).

Panama (the country) came into existence so the US could control the canal. Carter gave it away. A deal Trump would not have made.

I was there for five years. Many, many Panamanians wanted the U.S. to stay in charge of the Canal. They knew their government was corrupt.

I am convinced that Torrijoes never thought Carter would agree to give Panama the Canal. It was just an opening in the negotiations for a bit better terms. He was likely as surprised as anyone that Carter gave away the store.

“...allowing ships to reach Asia from the U.S. Gulf Coast more than two weeks faster than going east through the Suez Canal”

And that pesky pirate problem goes away.

Less canal fees for the arab springers.

“Less canal fees for the arab springers.”

Good point!

But the fees should be coming to the US, not Panama and China.

"Gave it away to a nation that didn’t exist before building ever started." The basis of the treaty that resulted in the canal was that the USA would recognize Panama as distinct from Colombia and build and defend the canal in perpetuity. At least, this is how I remember the broad picture.

But there were no Panamanians before that, they were Colombian.
