Paul Ryan’s Primary Challenger: ‘I Don’t Care About Puerto Rico’

House Speaker Paul Ryan’s primary opponent Paul Nehlen said the Puerto Rico debt crisis should not be a top priority for the representative of Wisconsin’s 1st congressional district in an exclusive interview with The Daily Caller News Foundation.

“I don’t care about Puerto Rico,” Nehlen told TheDCNF. “I care about people in this country dying from heroin.”

The businessman said the island, which faces a $70 billion debt burden and recently defaulted on a major loan payment, should be responsible for fixing its fiscal predicament, and slammed Ryan for supporting a bill Nehlen sees as a massive taxpayer bailout.

“The fact that [Ryan] has no time for our veterans but has all the time in the world for Puerto Rico?” Nehlen told TheDCNF. “Come on. He doesn’t care about Puerto Ricans. He could give a crap about Puerto Ricans. All he cares about are his hedge fund investors.”

“This is not a humanitarian crisis,” Nehlen said, arguing there are too many people capable of working using welfare programs on in the territory. “That’s a falsehood.”

“My mother is 70 years old and she’s working right now – she’s paying taxes,” he continued. “My mom should pay taxes for somebody in Puerto Rico who’s 50 and has decided, ‘Oh, the government said that I could go on vacation and be on retirement? That’s a humanitarian crisis? No. I reject that and the American people reject that.”

Why is this island a U.S. territory anyway? Did McKinley lose a bet?

Ryano is only out to feather his own nest, and help the multinational corps. move Americas jobs overseas, pay lower wages, and escape taxes. In return they give Ryano a big payoff, just like the Clinton’s.

I am sick of the larceny already. Nothing would be more satisfying than the ouster of Paul Ryan and his ilk. They are one baby step above Democrats.

He said “I don’t care about Puerto Rico.”

He is not alone. I would guess that 85% of Americans don’t care either. Puerto Rico is the shining example of the benefits of welfare and government waste of money.

Zero argument from me on all of that - he's out for personal gain no matter the damage he causes to the Nation - probably teaming up with Gore behind the scenes and definitely working to help Romney/Kristol/Cruz even though he detests Cruz but finds him useful.

I've seen folks saying Cruz should be Veep even though he has yet to reach out and support Trump. Funny how our "most hopefuls" always turn out to be rats. Rubio/Mia Love and many others have proven huge disappointments and some are even saying Rand Paul should be on the Veep shortlist.

Pogo had it right as far as "our side" goes....

I don't disagree with you on that. But until they are, we are on the hook for their obligations. Unfortunately, that "we" is congress, who has the oversight obligations (which they have mostly neglected). Hence the action here. The only other option (at least until they are no longer part of the United States) is bankruptcy, which really cannot be done without destroying the house of cards the economy is in.

I don't like it. But I also know that they are not yet a foreign country.

All he cares about are his hedge fund investors.”

Yep, there's someone speaking truth. The 'bail out' of PR is nothing more than paying off hedge funds INCLUDING 'high yields demanded by investors due to the high risk of default'

Wait - weren't those high yields there because there was a significant risk of losing money? Why would any repayment to investors include that money?

Here's how a scam free 'bailout' would work. The US government offers to buy those bonds AT THE SAME VALUE AS PURCHASED, including any discounts for 'risk assessment' calculations. The US government can then choose to forgive those bonds and bailout finished.

Personally, I'd MUCH rather see investors told 'eh, you charged us up to 18% interest AND chopped 5% off the front end because you said you were taking a high risk of us defaulting, then fine, we default, you've already priced in that risk.'

I went to Puerto Rico on my honeymoon. It’s cool. It’s ours and has been for 100 years. It needs to clean up governmental corruption and move forward, as do several States. Maybe I am just an imperialist, but I am into keeping and developing any territory we gain. Because if there is a lack of interest, or a power vaccuum, something far worse than the US will move in.

What's worse? Parasitic financial leeches upon our society that vote Democrat to ensure even more financial blood from me and all of the other hard working honest taxpayers? Or to cut them from our bonds and let them set their own destiny?

They voted to become a State a few years ago, which implies losing all the special perqs they had as a territory, and accepting all the responsibilities of being a state. It wasn’t finally approved by Congress. If they are willing to be held to the same standards as the other States, I’m for letting them in. I can’t be for “cutting loose” all the places that vote Democrat, or, as a Californian, I’d be cut loose along with them! Isn’t it our job to try to clean up corruption and try to grow the number of conservatives because that leads to freedom and prosperity? let’s take the long view and work toward it, not just quit early. IMHO.
