Garrett: Boeing deal with Iran proves crony capitalism is alive and well (Press Release)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Scott Garrett (NJ-05) released the following statement in response to reports that Boeing has reached a multibillion-dollar deal to sell commercial passenger planes to Iran. Boeing is one of the largest beneficiaries of the Export-Import (Ex-Im) bank which perpetuates corporate welfare to mega corporations by handing out taxpayer-backed loans.

"This agreement between Boeing and the world's largest state sponsor of terrorism is extremely troubling and shows that crony capitalism remains alive and well in Washington. Not only has Boeing lobbied for years to keep the taxpayer-backed Export Import bank alive, it now has also used its powerful position to take advantage of the ill-conceived nuclear deal with Iran. This agreement is bad news, not just for taxpayers but for our national security."

Boeing was lobbying Congress to keep their Ex-Im bank subsidies at the same time it was seeking carve outs from the Obama Administration to do more business with the dangerous Iranian regime. Garrett has been an outspoken critic of the Ex-Im bank and the Iran nuclear deal.

How do all of the Ex-Im Bank supporters continue to justify its existence? Obviously Boeing is either: 1. Not using the Ex-Im Bank and thereby proving they can make the riskiest of loans without help. Or 2. They will use the Ex-Im Bank and thereby prove how thoroughly corrupt the program is.

Either way all of the Ex-Im supporters are implicit in aiding Boeing in its sales to Iran.

Are you including Freepers, and there are quite a few, who support Ex-Im in that comment? Just asking for clarity’s sake.

Let the Iranians buy them from Airbus.

Apparently, Iran placed an order for 118 aircraft with Airbus in January, but that has to be approved by the US Treasury. There has to be a formal lifting of the sanctions.

Iran has complained about this, then decided that they could sweeten the deal by placing an order with Boeing, on the premise that if Boeing was also getting an order, Treasury would approve the deal faster.

I do not see how Boeing assumes the risk on this deal. Im sure there is a crony deal to stick us with the bill should Iran not pay up.

I just went through some old threads re. the Ex-Im bank and the “We Must Help Our Companies Beat the World” by giving them handouts. Amazing how much support it got. But now? Crickets!

Looks like all the die-hard let’s support our American Manufacturer’s have taken cover.

I will add. It think Boeing should be able to sell to whoever they wish. Unless we have declared war or such on a country there should not be restrictions. But do so on your own dime! And if Iran stiffs Boeing so much the better.
