I’m glad my Scottish ancestors were kicked out after Culloden and during the Clearances. I guess the best of them were finished off fighting all the British wars.
“I guess the best of them were finished off fighting all the British wars.”
One of my ancestors was probably a Scottish Brit Merc in the revolutionary war. After his side lost, he and other losers fled to Canada. Generations, later, one of his descendents, my ancestor came to the USA. The other Americans referred to them as Moss Backs. They and their children avoided censuses and any registration. They just appeared and died later, basically w/o documentation.
