Congressman Charles Rangel was swift-footed and savvy enough to stay ahead of demographic and geographic shifts in his district during his 46 years in the House of Representativesbut in the end, he just didnt have enough juice to anoint an heir.
Harlem Assemblyman Keith Wright lost his bid to replace his retiring 86-year-old mentor to State Senator Adriano Espaillat, who challenged Rangel in 2012 and 2014 but fell short. After a bitter Democratic primary campaignone with heavy ethnic overtonesthe Dominican Republic-born Espaillat beat the African-American Wright in the upper Manhattan-based district by approximately 1,300 votes.
Former White House aide Clyde Williams, another black candidate based in Harlem, placed third with more than 4,600 ballots and 11 percent of the overall vote.

Harlem’s political demographics have changed. This is the new Harlem. Period.
Or two candidates split the non-Dominican Black vote.
True. Wright does not want to concede, Al Sharpton endorsed Wright. David Dinkins, the former NYC mayor endorsed Wright as well. This is racial politics in Harlem and racial politics have been in NYC for decades.
Anyone would be in jail for tax fraud—but not Rangel.
When Charlie resigns I hope provision is made to provide him with armed security. He deserves it (and, no, you don’t).
Sheila Jackson Lee’s district has become much more Hispanic as well.
What's "Kingfish in Spanish?
Whoops, I meant to post my Rangel remarks on this thread. The Democrat nominee is a leftist, but Rangel and the Democrat Party brass supported someone else and the voters rebuked them. I certainly enjoyed that.
Espaillat was brought to the US illegally at the age of nine and is descended from a left-wing Dominican President. I think I’d have preferred to see Rangel’s lackey win rather than the first dreamer illegal Congressman. It also would have pissed off Hispanics if they failed to win the seat despite current demographics making them feel entitled to it, I was enjoying the racial acrimony.
