Gulen is reportedly a moderate Muslim who interprets Islam
in a way that promotes dialogue with Christians & Jews, and
favors doing service in one's community. I claim no expertise
in this matter.
However, as in the Reichstag Fire in 1933 when a communist
unemployed bricklayer was found inside the burning parliament
bldg and Hitler was able to convince Hindenberg to permit a
clampdown on communist activity and thereby pave the way
for Hitler's party to gain majority status, Erdogan has a most
convenient enemy in Gulen and his movement with which to
impose martial law and a consolidation of dictatorial powers.
But Gulen serves another iconic role for Erdogan. Just as
Mohammed vilified his Uncle Abu Jahl in his triumphant
return to Mecca, Erdogan will vilify Gulen in his
triumphant return to Istanbul. See Shoebat.com for his
lengthy, spellbinding analysis.

Gulen was a supporter of Erdogan from the get go... when Erdogan was clearly an islamist.
Their break, if there is one and it’s not just for show, was over ethical purity- or Erdogan’s family’s lack of it.
So I am not so sure Gulen is really a moderate. He seemed fine with Erdogan’s turn away from secularism, only getting weary of him when Erdogan’s son got caught in some financial fraud scheme. Remember that the word’s press considers Hamas to be moderate because they are the political wing rather than the military wing of the Muslim Brotherhood.
