Ohio Gov. John Kasich on Tuesday defended his decision not to attend the Republican National Convention in his home state.
Kasich, a former Republican presidential candidate himself, has refused to endorse Donald Trump
or attend the convention. But he did speak across town in an interview with the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce on the second day of the convention in Cleveland.
"That's not where I think I need to be in terms of what I have stood for throughout the presidential campaign," Kasich said when asked why he wouldn't just "give in" and attend the nominating event.
During the campaign, Kasich pushed back against harsh rhetoric on immigration from candidates such as Trump. Kasich backed a path to legal status and pushed back on the idea of deporting the millions of people in the country illegally.
Kasich avoided directly engaging with Trump, who was officially nominated on Tuesday. But he made clear that he has a very different posture on key points.
"You have to be a party that reaches out," he said, mentioning African-Americans and Latinos.
On immigration, he said, "It just seems like its a natural thing to do to be welcoming."
Trumps and Kasich's staff have engaged in a fiercer back and forth this week.
Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort, speaking at a Bloomberg breakfast Monday, said the governor is "embarrassing his party in Ohio" by not endorsing Trump.
Kasich strategist John Weaver shot back to Bloomberg on the possibility of Kasich serving as Trump's vice president: "A hologram of Abraham Lincoln could have come back and asked him and he would have said 'no.'''
But Kasich kept his remarks more positive on Tuesday.
He said that after the election, "Were going to have to sit down and were going to have to think about what our party is going to mean to people in the 21st century."
Bend over, Kasich and the government want to “welcome you”.
I do not believe anything Kasich says anymore. How do these dishonest punks who broke a signed pledge expect to be trusted or believed on any subject after the way they behaved?
Kasich is so dam*ed selfish he wouldn’t even welcome the R party or its nominee to the State of Ohio!!!!!
It is extremely difficult to even think of ANY governor of ANY state that wouldn’t even welcome a major party convention to his/her state, on behalf of the people of the state.... it is a courtesy, a ceremonial role... which ANY governor I am certain would do
this guy is a real pr*ck!
What's a Kasich?
Would that be the same right hand he raised when being sworn in to defend us from all enemies, foreign and domestic?
No wonder he thinks illegal invaders should be welcomed...a$$clown
John Kasich quote: I’m a jerk!
Ka-suck is such an idiot.
Didn’t his dad drive an IPS truck?
And you gotta’ judge him by the company he kept. Was shocked to hear Kasich and Condit were sleazy besties back in the day.
PLEASE STAND UP TO BE COUNTED “IF” YOU MISS KASICH AT THE CONVENTION.
LOL.
I’m just wondering how Republican voters in Ohio are feeling about their Governor right now.
If my Governor were acting like Kasich, I’d be pledging money to his next primary challenger.
“”That’s not where I think I need to be in terms of what I have stood for throughout the presidential campaign,” Kasich said”
What a totally worthless a$$hole! He stands for nothing but abject stupidity. Both her and Cruze need to be gone from the public arena for good!
He needs to grossly stuff his face full of food, which he is notoriously used to doing, just to keep his mouth shut.
Kasich is one of those type of guys who, a few years into Trump’s term, with the economy rebounding and national pride returning, will tell an interviewer, “You know, most people forget I supported him all along.”
Kasich is showing he is a low class whinney bitch
Morning Jazz
A pledge is a pledge. Kasich is unfit to remain in office.
AMF!
Side note...I’ve always thought Trump made an error whe he unilaterally signed the pledge to support the GOP nominee. He should have said “here is the document, I’ll sign it if everyone else does.” Graham would have been caught in that net.
I would too, Windy.
Ate breakfast awhile ago and Mike Huckabee on Fox really ripped Kasich. He said even though he’s a good friend there’s no excuse for his actions on the convention being it’s in his state, among a few other choice criticisms.
