Obama commutes sentences for 214 federal prisoners

President Barack Obama on Wednesday cut short the sentences of 214 federal inmates, including 67 life sentences, in what the White House called the largest batch of commutations on a single day in more than a century.

Almost all the prisoners were serving time for nonviolent drug crimes, reflecting Obama's long-stated view that the U.S. needs to remedy the consequences of decades of sentencing requirements that put tens of thousands of Americans behind bars for far too long. Obama has pushed for a broader fix to criminal justice laws and has used the aggressive pace of his commutations in an effort to pressure Congress and call more attention to the issue.

All told, Obama has commuted 562 sentences during his presidency -- more than the past nine presidents combined, the White House said. Almost 200 of those who have benefited were serving life sentences.

"All of the individuals receiving commutation today -- incarcerated under outdated and unduly harsh sentencing laws -- embody the president's belief that `America is a nation of second chances,"' White House counsel Neil Eggleston wrote in a blog post.

I’m surprised he didn’t give them all a full pardon so they could vote. Oh wait? What’s stopping these felons?

Good point...I think President Trump should find these paroled bums and put them on the Obama security staff.

That was my question too. Probably about as many as the percentage of Muslims serving in our military.

Every repeat violent crime that these bad seeds commit needs to be hung around Obama’s dirty neck.

This is only the beginning. Democrats after November will empty prisons from here and around the world and the probably put conservatives in them. It wouldn’t surprise me.

“Nonviolent” drug crimes?

Last year, more than 400 people in New Hampshire alone died of a drug overdose.

Good. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

The Tyrannical Drug War is and always has been illegitimate. Contraband Law invariably leads to Totalitarian policies such as unlawful search and seizure, no-knock warrants, disregard for the Fourth Amendment and, ultimately, innocent People getting killed, or their lives ruined, by the State.

Enforcement of such Arbitrary Law necessarily requires a bloated nanny-state, and an ever-increasing Police apparatus to enforce its associated Tyranny.

Anyone who supports such an expansive view of State Power can hardly call themselves a small-government conservative.

Parenthetically, Donald Trump, in the past, has expressed some rather libertarian sentiments with respect to the phony Drug War.

Vote Trump!

Almost all the prisoners were serving time for nonviolent drug crimes...

I heard a local attorney say that LEOs have told him that over 80% of violent crime is drug-related.

Thus it can be easily and correctly inferred...

... Drug crime IS violent crime, whether a strung-out baddie pulls the trigger or sells the junk.

.
