The lawyers I know all have a juris doctorate not a masters

Lawyers start with a J.D. (used to be LL.B.) degree. The only people who go on to get an LL.M. are lawyers who want to teach at law schools, or foreign lawyers who want a U.S. degree (which most states require in order to be admitted to practice).

The LLM does not qualify one to sit for the bar in most states....the JD does
