IMHO, a vastly underappreciated movie. Shades of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, a cautionary tale about the temptation to play God, and an exploration of the theme of technology outstripping ethics: should something be done merely because it becomes possible.
I think it also had a biblical allusion to Gen. 6:1-4. Dren transitions from something of almost angelic grace and elegance to something demonic, ultimately impregnating Elsa at the end of the movie.
I think it was a complex, multi-layered story that probably went over the heads of most movie goers and critics.
Splice was VERY disturbing and incredibly sad. Scientists will do what they can do. Consequences be damned.
